Minnesota fly fishing reports for all types of fly fishing in Minnesota. Please provide some helpful information about your trip to the waters so others might enjoy the same fly fishing outings. Do not provide exact detail information on specific spots about the waters you fished. The best reports are the ones that let others learn from your experiences.  Please use the Minnesota Fly Fishing Forums to post fly fishing questions. That way we can have fly fishing reports only here.  Minnesota Fly Fishing Reports has moved to a new forum. Minnesota Fly Fishing.

New Guy here!  (United States)

Hey everyone.

What can you tell a completely new guy to the fly/river fishing world?  I would like to hit some steelhead this spring, but know nothing about it.  Iwould also like to fly fish on the north shore rivers throughout the year.  Thank you in advance for any and all information.

Re: New Guy here!  (United States)

Talk to John at Great Lakes Fly Fishing in Downtown Duluth, at least for now they are moving out towards the Lester on June 1, I walked in there last spring with a buddy said "we need help, we're novice fly fisherman and want to catch a steelhead today" JOhn set us up with the proper rigging and patterns and sent us up to the Splitrock as it was early May, within 4 hours of waling into his shop we both had caught our first north shore steelies, mine was a gorgous 29" native fish judging buy the color it had been int he river only a day or so. What a thrill!

Good luck!

Re: New Guy here!  (United States)

I have to second the shout out to Great Lakes Fly Co.  It's a great shop and John is very helpful and really easy to talk to.  Definitely check 'em out and while you're in there ask about their bass flies.

Re: New Guy here!I agree John is great little resource in Dluth,   (United States)

I agree that John at Great Lakes Fly is a good resource for Northshore fishing info, although I would guess that he will willingly admit that he prefers the smallmouth over the traditional  steelhead and brook trout fishing you find up here...

I am happy that he is moving his shop only 5 block from my house though ;>
