sunnies!  (United States)

I took a break from hunting trout and got out for about an hour and a half today a small backwater bay of the mississippi and had a blast! I was pounding the sunnies and was able to fill a nice stringer of slabs!  In that short span I probably caught 20+.  I was just using a small yellow popper and it was slaughtering the little guys.  I also caught a glimpse of some good size largemouths in some really shallow water (1-2ft.) in the lillies and right under some heavy brush over hanging the water bank.  I tried to toss my popper in there but ended up getting it stuck more times than not, oh well it was good to work on putting the fly on a certain target anyways.  It was a first for me to try fly fishing for something other than trout and it honestly was a lot more satisfying to land a nice sunnie with the fly rod than a spinning unit.  I plan to do more!

Re: sunnies!  (United States)
Big sunnies are great on the fly rod!!! So are largemouth. If interested, pike are usually somewhere in the same place, at least the hammerhandles(little guys) with be. Catching pike is the best experience i've had fly fishing. I live in S.E. Mn, trout streams everywhere, but warmwater is so exciting too.
If your serious about largemouth, try 4 inch plastic worms, standard texas rig, no weight though. Works great on the flyrod. Casting takes some effort, but so does any large bug or fly.

Check out my 9" Bluegill on a big 2" popper! It is attached to my name on the left. I could barely get the hook out of his mouth. Unfortunately, I was using a 7# rod, so not much of a challenge. It's all good.

Re: sunnies!  (United States)

Since the last post, I upgraded the picture to a musky...

Sunfish are a blast to catch on a 2 weight rod. Unfortunately, I get many swallowed hooks since the bite so hard. I went to larger hooks and that seemed to help.
