Brought the fly rod out today after a buddy of mine said he was going to catch some crappies. He didn't tell me the crappies were on fire and willing to bite. He was using crappie jigs etc, while I was using my trusty 4wt fly rod. I kept up with his jigging and brought home a mess of crappies for a meal. The crappies were running in loose schools eating everything it seemed like.
This is the first time in a long time that I remembered actually persueing crappies on the fly rod and having a blast. The weather was cold, cloudy and very windy. But we were able to get out of the wind for little bit so I could cast. I was tossing a BH woolly bugger and they were just slamming it. The crappie action should continue to be good for the next 2-3 weeks in the Northern Minnesota area, obvisously each lake is different, but normally the further north, the later the season is.
So if you can get a chance to get out with the fly rod in hand, try for some spring time crappie.
I'll post a couple pics from the trip later.
