Salmon/Steelhead
 (United States)
Hey guys, I am going to try to hit the NS area for some salmon and steelhead fishing this year.  I have fished quite a bit down south, but I'm pretty uneducated when it comes to the big boys.  Any information on when the runs hit peak, good streams, equipment (9 wt rod?), flies, etc.  I would appreciate it.  Thanks!

Your best chances are probably in Mid September through October.  The best thing to do is watch what the weather is doing in the Duluth area.  The first cold Fall rains usually get things going and were going to need a lot of rain with the lack of it we had this year.  A 9wt would work, maybe a little on the bigger side, but better then going to small, 7wt-9wt are good sizes.
Most of the stream get some kind of run, some better then others for sure, even small little streams get some runs.  Those less known streams are the ones that most people don't talk about unless someone takes you there.

The thing about the spring and fall runs is having the option of heading out (burning vac or have a flexible job close to the rivers) when weather is just right and fish start running, otherwise it's hit and miss.

Call John at Great Lakes Fly Company located in Downtown Duluth.  He's keeps a good beat on what it working on the NS and when the runs are going strong.  There is also some good fishing for pink salmon that is getting better every year.  They are smaller salmon, but fun on a 5 and 6wt and have huge runs.

Good luck out there and let John know that I sent you.

Re: Salmon/Steelhead

The fall is my favorite time of the year up here. The Brule has a good number of browns, a few steelhead, and a few cohos in it right now. Pink and King Salmon are staging off the river mouths on the north shore. They should run if we get some rain, we need it bad! There are too many tipss and techniques to even get started on steelhead fishing on the brule. (right now anyways, gotta get back to work) But if you give north shore salmon a shot, try stripping a green wooly bugger almost as fast as you over active fish. You can get some explosive hits this way from a fish that the majority of people think you have to drift a yarn fly into their mouth to catch them.

Good luck if you make it up.

By default new forum users cannot edit previous post.  I have to run a special process once a month that updates all new forum users to give them the ability to edit previous post.  Giving editing abilities opens up a whole different can of worms, but so far it hasn't been a problem on this forum yet.  So you should be able to edit now.
