Smallmouth topwater action!

Smallmouth in the local waters has been good and bad.  I've been out quite a bit chasing smallies this year, evn in this warm weather we've been having and top water flies are working really good.  Flies that give alot of commotion have been working good.  Otherwise subsurface streamer patterns are still working.  Smallmouth are not afraid of warm water temps, if their primary prey is in warm water, then they won't be far behind.

I got a new toy this year and chasing smallies where most don't ever get to fly fish.  I'll post some pics soon.

Here's a pic of the new toy, the smallmouth fishing machine!

If anyone gets a chance to float in one of these, they are a blast.   Dave Scadden makes some awesome boats, especially the unique slide out standing plate.  If anyone wants to try it and is in the area, give me an email.

Nice!  Have you spent much time on rivers with it yet?  I am really interested in how well they row in currrent.  I checked them out down at the show this year and they really seemed solid.  I spend a lot of time on the Lower Namekagon and the St. Croix.   I am sure it would work great there.  I also liked the Outcast Pac 1200.

Every chance I get to take it out I do.  Up here in Northern MN like the St. Louis River and Cloquet Rivers, most of the access points are carry down access, the boat only weight 80lbs so it works great for working small stretches of the river for a few hours at a time.  Whereas with mckenzie style driftboats you need trailerable access which means full day trips in between launches.

They would work excellent on the Nam and St. Croix for sure.  The Scadden pontoon I have is very manueverable in river current and have taken it down some class 3 and almost 4 rapids.  Kinda scary, but that because of the inexperience going thru big rapids, but the boat made it through ok and kept me floating :)  There are some spots on the St. Louis River that I like to row up (or mount an electric motor) stream and it's very easy to do even through some of the faster narrow chutes.  What's cool about pontoon boats, especially going up stream, but downstream as well, is going over shallow rapids sections.  There are some spots when going upstream that have shallow rapids that you can't row up, paddle up or even use a motor.  So I just pull up to the base of the rapids, slide off the seat in between the pontoons while holding onto the frames, wade and push the boat upstream to where I can row again.  I can get into some nice spots without having to put in far upstream and drift down.

The one thing that sets Dave Scadden boats from the rest, beside the lifetime guarantee on most their boats, is the slide out standing deck.  That is an awesome feature that Outcast does not have.  By the way Dave used to work for Outcast and worked on some of their current models out now.  The slide out deck lets you use your pontoon just like a kick boat (Outcast), but it also lets you stand up and use the lean bar if you want by sliding the casting deck forward.

I swear there are only two 2-3 man pontoon boats up in the Duluth area, mine and John's from Great Lakes Fly Shop that has the Pac1200.  I get some strange looks when I'm trailering my around and stop to get gas
