Minnesota Fly Fishing Reports

Minnesota fly fishing reports for all types of fly fishing in Minnesota. Please provide some helpful information about your trip to the waters so others might enjoy the same fly fishing outings. Do not provide exact detail information on specific spots about the waters you fished. The best reports are the ones that let others learn from your experiences.  Please use the Minnesota Fly Fishing Forums to post fly fishing questions. That way we can have fly fishing reports only here.  Minnesota Fly Fishing Reports has moved to a new forum. Minnesota Fly Fishing.

Where to fish?
 (United States)
Greetings, I know this might be a taboo question to ask in the fishing world, but I am very new to stream fishing in the Mpls. St. Paul area, and I'm wondering if anyone can share where they go in the area to stream fish for trout? I have the maps from the DNR, but I'm not sure where to drive to and park... Thanks.

Yeah that is a bit of a sore subject for some people, but there are a few resources to consider.  First there are two books that have information on that subject, Flyfisher's Guide to Minnesota by Mickey Johnson, and Another that covers Minnesota and Wisconsin by Jim Humphrey and Bill Shogren they name of which escapes me right now.  They basically just list the trout waters in the area, and give specific information on things like where to park.  Something to keep in mind is that its usually O.k. to just pull off the highway near a bridge (as long as its not an interstate), and the bridges are usually the most common access points to public easements.  Hay Creek is the closest water in Minnesota that is worth fishing, but if you live in the Twin Cities, and don't mind paying the $70 out of state license fee with trout stamp to fish in Wisconsin, the Kinnickinick river around the area of River Falls is a first class trout fishery.  The Kinnie has smaller trout, but tremendous numbers of fish (10,000 per mile on some stretches).  It's pretty hard to get people to reveal their best spots, but the DNR maps are awesome.  Find a water that looks intriguing to you, find a public easement on that water, and then just drive there.  Lots of those areas have parking that will be obvious thats setup by the DNR, and if not just pull off onto the shoulder near the bridge.  If you are near a bridge the cops will know you are fishing and leave you alone.  Avoid the metro area creeks like Browns, and also the Vermillion.  The Vermillion is very difficult to fish, and access at this point is limited to the city park in Farmington (I heard that a large section has just been purchased as a easement which might open up some fishing there next year).  The further you are willing to drive the better the fishing gets (if you stay in Minnesota).  The Root river is fed by a myriad of good cold water spring creeks, and the river itself boasts some excellent fishing in its various branches and forks.  I've heard good things about the Whitewater as well.  Hope that helps.

Re: Where to fish?

remember that where ever you fish to check the regulations for that stream and also remember that some streams in minnesota may have different regulations on the same river just in different sections. Like mentetioned when you look at your maps just pay attention to where the roads cross the streams (bridge) and if it looks like crap just drive down or up to the next. Also another book to pick up if you have the chance is Mike Heck's Spring Creek Fishing and Strategies (I believe this is the name).  He's a Pennsylvania guide that fishes spring creeks, he basically goes through all the basic of insects, how spring creeks work, and different techniques of fly fishing spring creeks. Its a great book and relates closely to Minnesota. Just another one to add along and also just a good read. I also have the book psyfisher is talking about, writen by Jim Humphrey. I just got it and its a very helpful book.

just thought id throw my two cents into the pot.

Where to fish?
 (N/A)

If you want a book about flies, how to tie them, when to use them, and how to fish them, then you can't go wrong with ross Mueller's two books about fly fishing the Midwest.  He's from Appleton, WI and fishes Iowa , Minnesota, and Wisconsin with frequency.  They are must haves IMO.  If you're looking for maps, particularly for Minnesota, contact the DNR and get the free southeast Mn easement map (also available free at Gander Mountain in Rochester, gateway to southeast Minnesota fishing).

Fishing has been very good all year in southeast MN.

Another two cents,

D.A.

Early in 2000, the Groundfish Forum applied for and received an Experimental Fishing Permit to test a halibut excluder for use in the trawl fisheries for cod. This experiment was conducted with another industry association and the National Marine Fisheries Service. Results of the initial tows were that the reduction in halibut bycatch was near 80% but about 50% of the cod were also escaping.
