Hello.  I'm new to this forum and looking for any information about trout fishing the North and South shores from Duluth / Superior outward.  I'm familiar with the Spring Steelhead fishing (and will be up there for it again this year God and the weather willing) around the Knife River, but still need more info on it, and other times of the year / locations to fish.  I also wouldn't mind the names of good / reasonably priced guides, or entire package trips anyone can recommend.  My plan(?) this Spring is to hit the Steelhead run again, but try some new locations that might give me some chances at bigger fish than my last trip, and to plan another trip later in the year to fish for whatever is left.  I'm pretty familiar with the area up there, particularly the North shore and Duluth, but not quite as much the South shore.  In return I can offer some advice from Missouri to anyone interested.

The Knife river is probably one of the easiest rivers to get access to, but i'd say it's one of the best within a short driving distance of Duluth, MN.  But then again you also get the crowds that come along with it.  I used to do a lot of salmon fishing along the North Shore when they were coming in good numbers, but the crowds just got out of hand and it just wasn't fun anymore fly fishing with all the egg sacs and weighted yarn getting slung around.  Now once in a while when I feel like checking out my old haunts, I'll head up the north shore and fish the Knife River or the Sucker River and also the Lester River.  The Knife River is considered an excellent river because the fish don't have a lot of obstacles to get in the way as they make their way up to the head waters.  But their a lot of excellent rivers all the way up to Grand Marais, but that would make a long day for day fishing trip if your based out of Duluth.  You can also wade around the mouth of the French River.  You actually might see some others fly fishing as well, but most fisherman will be using some kind of bobber or floats with bait.

Timing is everything on the North Shore and watching the local weather patterns, so if your not from here, your basically taking a gamble, but hay that's fishing anyways.  Almost all the north shore streams and creeks have spawning runs, including the ones right in the city of Duluth.  The lesser known and smaller river and creeks will have smaller runs, but usually have less people fishing them and you'll have some quality fishing to yourself, but like I said earlier, a lot depends on the weather.  You can be on one creek with no fish, then drive up another mile to the next creek and it will have lots of fish.  When your up and don't have a guide, you can try doing a lot hoping from one creek/river to the next.

Most of the major rivers along the South Shore have spring runs as well.  You probably heard of the Brule River and for good reason.  If your looking for an experience, besides just catching a steelhead, the Brule River is the place to be.  If you fish during the weekdays, you'll see less anglers out.  The Brule River is self sustaining and true gem in the midwest.  I don't guide during the spring and fall runs, but fish it quite regurlarly.  April is a very good time to fish it.  I prefer fishing the Brule River during the general trout opener on the upper sections of the river for residence browns, rainbows and brook trout, classic fly fishing waters.  This is when and where I guide on the Brule River and the only place I guide for trout now.

The other times I'm guiding for warmwater species like smallmouth, pike and musky.

I think someone from Great Lakes Fly Company mentioned someone was looking for a guide in the area and sounded like your post, you must have been the person.  I personally don't know of anyone guiding along the North Shore, I'm sure there is, just haven't met them yet.  Great Lakes Fly Company has some contacts for the Brule River and quite a few guides work this river.
