Smaal Mouth Bass on the Mississippi
 (United States)
I have been fishing below the St. cloud dam for small mouth in the evenings(7:00-8:30) and doing quite well.  I have been using a foam "popper" I created with a yellow top and green bottom.  A slow twitching retrieve seems to work best and this evening I caught a half dozen in the 14"-16" range.  I am a little out of my league at this since I have never fished for bass before, being from Idaho and more familiar with trout.

Sounds like your doing alright to me.  14" - 16" fish are nice fish in almost anyones book, especially on the fly.  Great job gausshawn!  September is the my favorite month for smallies and you'll start seeing some bigger ones more often as the season goes on.

Thanks for the report.

Caught a 17 inch Northern near damn today. used a patter called "white" which i belive is given on this site as a fly tying article. basically it is a size 1 hook, with spun rabitt hair head encompasing barbell eyes and a rabbit strip body. Pretty exciting since it was the first fish i caught with a fly of my own making. Give it a try

It's always great to catch your first fish on your very own tied fly.  Even all these years for me it's still a great feeling to catch fish on something you spent your own time tying at the vice.  Plus you get to experiment and come up with own designs and patterns.  Congrats HauntedbyWaters!

Tight lines.

If you can get to Monticello try fishing the parks on the river.  Great smallmouth action!

Re: Smaal Mouth Bass on the Mississippi

I live a little east of there packfancjh, and so far this year I've caught less smallies than the past 10 years. I'm not sure why, and I have tried every go to fly in my box, even tied some new patterns. On the other hand, i have caught a ton of crappie-weird. Never in this section of the river before. I also caught a huge catfish on a clouser. Took me to the backing, and bent my 6 wgt tip to the water. I eventually landed it, but it swallowed the fly. I often wondered how much the river bottom changes over the years, and if this has a large effect on the smallies, or just because the river has been running high lately. Any guess?
