I think I should have gone further south past the bridge on 74 to see what I could find. The proprietor at the gas station was adament about me going out of the park and north.

There are trout in the park proper - many rainbows due to supplemental stocking after last August's floods (though I caught all browns when I was there with my son worm fishing this summer).  The best rule of thumb with Whitewater is - get away from Elba and the park 9and people) and get out in the wilds.  If you can do some hiking, then do it.  You'll be rewarded with fewer people and probably mroe fish.

Good luck,

Re: White Water River

Today is the last day of the trout season in Minnesota!

I am going to the White Water today for a last 2008 try at catching some fish. Earlier in September we went down to the Lanesboro area and I was able to catch a few trout in the Root, so that helped this novice build some confidence.

Last week I was able to fish the Bighorn River near Fort Smith in Montana.  My brother-in-law had fished it before and encouraged me to go along with him this time.  We didn't do well wading the first afternoon but hired a guide and a float boat the second day.  According to the locals action on the Bighorn has slowed considerably this year, but we were able to catch 20 browns and rainbows in the 13 inch to 19 inch range.  It was great fishing and, although the trip was kind of spendy, I will probably try it again.

Shortly I will be starting a consulting assignment that will have me travelling all over Montana, so I will have the opportunity to try all the renowned trout streams and rivers, including the Madison, Gallatin, Yellowstone, and Missouri.  Thankfully, Montana's season doesn't close at the end of September.

I suppose many of you will be out on this last day of 2008.  Good luck.

Well folks, I was able to catch two small browns on the South Fork in about 4 hours of fishing.   A couple more struck my beadhead, but I missed them

I then went to Elba and took the advice of the Cenex guy to go north and fish where the Hwy 30 bridge crosses the river.  I caught three more nice sized (13 to 14 inch) rainbows near the bridge on white beadhead that the Cenex guy recommended, but wading that area is not advised.  The bottom is very soft and feels like one would just keep sinking.

yeah.... don't give up on the whitewater...... that thing's got fish in it....... i had my best day on the water in years-- probably since my last trip to the bighorn, but i tend to place that river in a class by itself..... it spoils you...... you can't expect the average size and numbers you get there on a regular basis......

anyway, i digress..... i'm sure plenty were stockers, but we got tons of browns and rainbows on the last weekend of fishing...... action was non-stop..... for sections to fish, i've had luck on the north fork upstream of elba out of the park;  this time was a new section for me, as i'd never fished the middle fork in the park...... look for c&r regs, or artificial only regs..... this typically means it's a section of stream worth protecting, and you know not as many, if any, trout are being yanked out...... don't be afraid to walk..... you get away from the people and it's generally prettier..... a solid twenty minute walk will get you away from the people almost with impunity..... plus, sections of it open jan. 1, so you can shake off the winter doldrums and cure that cabin fever if global warming cooperates.....
