Early season 2008
 (United States)
Howdy, Im heading home (Rochester) over Easter weekend and was hoping to do some fishing. Anyone been out this year? What rivers are fishable at this time? Should I even bring waders? Is this really enough questions in a row?

Re: Early season 2008

I was out on Tuesday and the streams were in fine shape and fishing was very good.  Of course, we're still in the C&R winter season, so make sure you're on a winter stream, using debarbed hooks, and carefully releasing any fish you catch.

There is a lot of snow out there which makes walking the streams a little effort.  If the snowmelt accelerates, the streams could muddy up.

I hit Hay Creek this week with a buddy right before the big snowfall.  The water was pretty stained, a lot of runoff even prior to all of the recent snow so it might get interesting here as this new stuff starts to melt.  We had good luck and caught some 12"+ fish. It was my friends second time fly fishing and the first fish he caught was the fish of the day, a 14.5 incher. As far as tactics go, roll those nymphs (pt's, bead head princes) real slow under a small strike indicator.  Sneak up on your holes that you want to fish because they will be spooky.  good luck

Well... last year when I went home and watched 12 inches of rain fall the night before my fishing trip. This time I watched 6 inches of snow. Why dont you guys want me to fish down there? Well, at least the Brule opens next Saturday!

Yes, I wish I were up north in another week or two. Sounds like the streams are calling everyone back in their subtle ways.
