Minnesota Fly Fishing Reports

Minnesota fly fishing reports for all types of fly fishing in Minnesota. Please provide some helpful information about your trip to the waters so others might enjoy the same fly fishing outings. Do not provide exact detail information on specific spots about the waters you fished. The best reports are the ones that let others learn from your experiences.  Please use the Minnesota Fly Fishing Forums to post fly fishing questions. That way we can have fly fishing reports only here.  Minnesota Fly Fishing Reports has moved to a new forum. Minnesota Fly Fishing.

Hay Creek
 (United States)
I am thinking about heading down to Red Wing today since it will be so nice. I have not fished Hay Creek before and advice for a rookie?

Re: Hay Creek

hay creek is a good winter choice. but it can be crowded. there are 3 diferent roads to veer off of from the highway, starting at dressens bar( great burgers by the way!).

TCTU is going to do 2 projectson Hay this summer. keep checking www.twincitiestu.org for updates.

Hi,

The Twin Cities TU Banquet is April 5th. This year we are working with the DNR to fix up Hay Creek, make it some seriously good water. We have a ton of great gear, trips and tickets. We would love to see you there, and if your interested in food I have to place the order. Check out www.twincitiestu.org

I just wanted to update this post. I am wondering how any of you have been doing in hay creek. I live around the area. I fish hay creek quite a bit.The longer you walk seems to be the better the payout! Seems you do have to settle for many small browns here though. Have any of you fished spring creek wich is close by?

Re: Hay Creek

Was able to get out on Hay Creek for the first time for a couple of hours this evening and managed a couple of browns (9" and 12").  Since these were the first trout I've caught without the guiding skills of my buddy who has been fishing for years, I considered it a very good night.  R Kutschied, this is the first I've been out on Hay and could use a little more guidance on best access to good water if you'd be willing to share some insight?  Not looking for specific spots, just curious where the best access points to good water might be?  Send me an email at ginner26@gmail.com if you'd rather not post to the board.  Thanks.

Re: Hay Creek

I took the day off yesterday to go fishing in Hay Creek.  There was a hatch going on at 9am and many surfacing.  I tried my mayflies but to no avail. nymphing still seemed to be the best bet as when i changed flies i landed a nice 9in brown right away.

Ginner, the places i get in at are all off the road. I get in around dressens or two roads south. No special places, just the same places thet get fished by many others. The only thing i can say is the longer you walk the closer you get to the glory hole, just like all streams. Ask glockman he will tell you.

I am also headed there tommorrow, actually. We are back in Cannon Falls to visit relatives and it is the closest river I can find. Last year, I started about 2 miles north of the camping area. It was alot of fun, and no one around, surprisingly. We'll see how it goes.

I hit 4 Brown's in 2hours using the #14 prince nymphs. They were 8"-10" range. Not bad if you dont mind fighting the weeds.

Re: Hay Creek

thats the perfect size fly for hay creek.  Actually i havent had any luck with anything else there. however i think the further you go up river the larger fish u will find.  Maybe even some that havent been caught before!! Theres an old railroad tressel about an eighth ofa  mile away from the road. If you go another eighth past that theres a nice sized pool in a bend of the river.  It might be up to 6 feet deep. If you stay there for a hatch you might be walking thru weeds or the river in the dark, but u may have a keeper in your basket. I think i need to spend a wholel day there exploring.

Re: Hay Creek

before you go harvesting fish, be minful of not only the slot regs, but that fish over 16" are prime spawners, let em live to spawn again. the smaller fish taste better anyways.

Fished hay creek tonite.  Oh my what a tornado will do!! If you want to get to the good spots further from the road now you will want to have a whole day.  There are countless trees that have blown down over the good pools.  The walking is also quite trecherous.  Should be increadible habitat for next year tho.  Great for fish, terrible for fly fisherman!  Also i found a hole in my new waders so everything just seemed terrible.  I also saw a whole bunch of wood ducks!!

Those are time well spentt. I helped MNTU on a project about 2 years ago, in SE Minnesota. Well worth the time. Hopefully, you'll post a picture someday. MNTU used to have them on their website.
