Good news from the SE!
 (United States)

Just got back from an extended weekend in Caledonia, MN.  The fishing was fantastic! Winnebego creek and Money Creek are running clear and there is a great hatch of BWO's coming off in the evening.....hoppers also worked well.   Daytime though was all about the nymphs.

Bever Creek is very muddy and there have been some changes due to the floods......lots of silt.  We chose not to fish there because of this, but there were others down along the stream.  As we walked the streams we did pick up a bunch of garbage (possibly due to the floods) just to keep the area clean and the streams healthy.

Bring your fishing license!  The DNR for whatever reason (maybe because of bow season) are out in force so we were checked.

I would guess the stepped up enforcement is a combination of bow and small game seasons opening, plus trout is no kill with barbless hooks until the end of the year.  I'm hoping they're out enforcing the no-kill rule.

Glad you had a good weekend.  Fishing's been pretty solid since late August.  The floods didn't wreck as much as I think people maybe believe.  You just have to know where to go.

Hello all - my first time on the sight - have been lurking but wanted to try to increase the activity on this site.

Had a nice morning (2 hours, 615-830) on trout run creek (south of Chatfield). 2 14 inch browns and one 8-10 incher. Lost at least 2 others. All taken on BH hare's ear variants. Lots of surface activity began around 730A, fish leaping. Got a nice hit and miss on a 16 parachutte adams - but then went back to the nymph for more consistency.

Likely my last outing for the year. Was gorgeous.

Looking forward to Winter season!

Paul

Welcome Galardy and thanks for great report!  Sounds like you had a fantastic time for your last day this year.  I still have one month to sling the rods around or until my line starts freezing to my guides

Tight lines and see ya on the water!

Well.....my luck changed in Wisconsin.  Headed to the Rush last Friday, but all I caught was weeds and had a bite from a bat that followed my fly as I casted in the fading light.   There was a nice hatch of what appeared to be size 18 BWO's but they were feeding just unnder the surface.  I tried a dry to match the hatch, then a nymph then a combo of a dry and an emerger and NOTHING!  Those little #$@%^!  They did water follies around my fly.  Oh well......somedays you catch and others you just watch. :)

Re: RE: Good news from the SE!

I am going to be in MN for the Christmas weekend, visiting the inlaws, and was wondering if a guy could get into the streams around the RedWing/Cannon Falls area this time of year. I have not tried fishing in December, but guess it could be froze over. If so, what fly would you use? HA! Probally something shiny, I cant see them doing much. I know it is catch and release only. I have a nice set of waders, just in case. Any help would be appreciated! Since I moved to KC from Rochester, I have really been out of the loop. Went trout fishing in southern Missouri, otherwise I spend my time catching largemouth on the flyrod. Not much trout action down here.

Sorry my friend but the season is closed during December.  Limited C&R opens up on January 1st.  From what I understand there is open water on the Whitewater year round, and any spring creek has an influx of fresh relatively warm water and won't freeze over.  If you make it out during January be prepared for midge hatches.  Try a Griffiths Gnat in size 18 or smaller to simulate a mating ball, otherwise nymphs are the key.  In Missouri next season try the North fork of the White River for naturaly reproducing 'bows and stocked browns.  There are other smaller creeks that have trout as well.  Perhaps not as productive as the Driftless, but worth checking out if you need a fix and don't want to drive a long way.
