Favorite Spots for Rainbows
 (United States)
Hey Everyone

Still enjoying my first season as a trout fisherman, and have alot of firsts to report since that inital outting on Gribben Creek.  Got my first trout on a dry fly, which was quite a thrill (even if it was a six inch brown), and my first brook and rainbow trout while on a vacation in the Black Hills of South Dakota.  Fished a picturesque stretch of mountain headwater called Spearfish Creek, with four hundred foot cliff walls rising up around me, and caught all three species of trout on the same stream in one day!  Back to the subject though, I also hooked into my first good Rainbow, and was impressed with it's acrobatics (he jumped five feet out of the air if it was an inch).  Was wondering if people could pipe in with thier favorite spots for catching Rainbow Trout in Southeastern Minnesota, or if they have some good ones north of the metro I'd love to hear about em.  I've been concentrating my efforts around Gribben Creek since it is generaly fairly deserted so my flailing about dosen't disturb any more experienced fishermen, plus I'm trying to get a sense of the different patterns that trout can get into, and I figure if I concentrate on one location I can spot them more consistently.  Only problem is Gribben only has Browns in it, so was wondering where to find the Rainbows.  Location isn't a big deal since I drive from the cities anyway, and don't mind a haul to find fish, so western Wisconsin isn't out either.

So in summary, would love to know where to find Rainbows in Minnesota and Western Wisconsin.  Size isn't as important as numbers to me yet since I'm still getting the hang of things.

Thanks
Justin

Re: Favorite Spots for Rainbows
 (N/A)

Rainbows are a stocked species in southeast Minnesota, typically stocked for two reasons.  The largest is for put and take reasons.  They are typically stocked before the opener in April, Memorial Day, July 4th, and then usually over Labor Day weekend.  If you want to catch them, go to a stream without any special regulations.  They aren't stocked on special regs waters (for the most part), and sweet little spring creeks like Gribben don't get them as the browns and brookies have a thriving population.

Hope this makes sense,

D.A.

A relative has told me that the DNR will be dumping 750 Rainbows in the two ponds in the Lanesboro park on Thursday.  I prefer the wild browns that swim Trout Run, but this would be fun.  The ponds are a great place to take kids.
