Hay Creek
 (N/A)

1st timer. Went to Hay Creek on Saturday morning. Busy, but found a place that wasn't hit. Found fish schooled up in deep holes, but we didn't find anything in fast moving water. That seemed strange to me, but I just started fly fishing a couple years ago. My buddy caught a couple, but I am sitll learning how to cast well. However, I did miss a good one on a dry fly. Dont' know what it was because my buddy gave it to me. I think it was a Hendricks. I love it. I am really looking to learn. Any tips???

Re: Hay Creek

Given my recent experience on The Whitewater, I would suggest having some Little Black Caddis in your arsenal if you plan to get out any time soon.  I absolutely slayed them this weekend.  The pattern is simple, an Elk Hair Caddis with a dark grey/black body and grizzly or dark dun hackle in a size 18.  I tie all my Elk Hair Caddis with Deer Hair, simply because it's A) what I have a lot of in my tying kit, and B) I think it looks more caddisy (if that's a word) than elk hair.  More of a dirty gray, as 90% of caddis seem to be as opposed to the blonder elk hair.

If you don't tie or can't find a suitable pattern, get any old #18 caddis pattern and do what I did last weekend:  color them with a black permanent marker.  Works like a charm.

As a general tip, don't overlook faster water.  Even if you can't see them trout are probably in there.  Faster riffles, chutes, and runs are a great place to throw nymphs.  And in such conditions, don't be shy about adding weight.  If you're not catching a rock or two, you probably won't be catching many fish either.  And the great thing about nymphing is, you don't have to have a great cast to do it.  With all that weight on the line a simple lob is the best approach.  Backcast, what's a backcast?  Just let the current load the rod and lob the rig back upstream.  When in doubt, set the hook.

Thanks for the info.  We fished the fast water but didn't catch anything. Is the water down do you think on Hay Creek? One thing I know is that I definately need to load up on flys and nymphs. Have you ever fished the recently designated trout stream "the vermillion"? I heard some five pounders live in that baby. I appreciate the advice. Keep it coming.

Re: Hay Creek

I fish Hay quite a bit. It's close. It may be a bit low, but not too bad. The trout can hide in amazingly shallow water.  8" will hold a nice surprize if you can sneak up and get a good cast in before they sence you're there. I guess I asume anything deeper than 6-8" has fish and give it a sneaky shot or two before moving on. Walk lightly, move slow and low. If you can see them, they probably have seen you. If you don't see any, they probably see you coming and are hiding before you get there. Hay gets POUNDED! so "SNEAKY" is the order of the day.

Good luck out there.

Jim

farmington, the vermillion does have big browns, i saw a pair of them last time i was there but they were very finiky. i casted everything i could think of a i didnt even get a glance out of them. its a harder stream to fish. like  alot of streams it gets pounded, especially being closer to the cities.

You can tie em with Peacock Hurl instead of Hackle, and it makes em darker on the bottom, and you can avoid the permanent marker.  I have to think that may be toxic to fish, but maybe the ammount is too low.  If I catch any with black lips I'll know who to blame.

Do you fish it often? I have not fished it at all. I am not much for spinner fishing for trout anymore, but do you think that's the only way to get some of these guys to bite? Have you caught many smaller trout on the vermillion? It seems like a slower moving stream.

The Sharpie trick was a last-ditch, desperation sort of move.  I now have a dozen actual black caddis sitting in my box, should the need arise. . . .Get it a rise. . .hahahhahah.   I crack myself up sometimes.
