Saved by a Sharpie
 (N/A)
As in the marker.  I was back on the South Branch of the Whitewater.  Three words:  Little Black Caddis.  They were hatching like mad and the fish were going bonkers.  Large trout acting very foolishly.  Unfortunately, I didn't have any in my flybox.  But for some odd reason, I did have a black Sharpie marker in my backpack.  Instant Little Black Caddis!  I ended up giving every size 18 caddis pattern in my box a paint job over the course of the weekend.  They were the only flies needed.   Sunday was absolutely out of control.  It was a 30-40 fish day, and I took a couple of hours off in the middle of the afternoon.  The cooler temps and stiffer breeze Monday morning made for tougher fishing, not to mention the guys walking the stream who insisted on spooking my pool/run/riffle as they walked by.  Good thing I ran out of the right flies, or I would have been caught in the giant storms down there right now.   Said storms probably are blowing the streams out at this very moment.  There were some Hendrickson, but the fish didn't seem to notice them too much.

Pretty quick thinking Bill.  I just added a 6 pack of multi-colored sharpies to my vest...

I know what you mean.  I was in the SE on Sunday, lots of midges early in the am.  Then the caddis turned on as it got a little warmer (blacks, like you said).  Fish weren't just rising, in a few spots they were physically propelling themselves out of the water after the flutterers.  Luckily, I did have some black caddis in my case but not enough.  The first fish I caught pounded one in a little section of slackwater...first cast.  That's when you know it will be a good day.  The only thing that could have made it better would have been if I had taken everything else out of the box and tied 40 more black caddis on Saturday night.  It was fun to see fish in the shallow water.  However I did not see any mayflies whatsoever which surprised me a bit.

I only noticed the Hendrickson late late in the evening, just as the light was fading.  The caddis had already turned in for the night and I just happened across a few females over a riffle.  I tied on a spinner and picked up one fish before it got too dark.  I did see some nymphs/emergers going by in a pool that I was waiting to become unspooked on Monday morning/early afternoon, but due to the weather/having work today, I didn't stick around to see what, if any, spinner fall might have happened.  And though I was camped right on the stream, I didn't even bother fishing before the caddis got moving.  Why goof around with midges when you can have a second cup of coffee and still go out and hammer some fish?
