A Day Late. . .
(N/A) Modified By Tacklebill on 3/12/2007 7:00:51 PM)
The old "You should have been here yesterday" strikes again.

After working all weekend, and reading the good reports on the MNTU board, I was chomping at the bit to make my first outing of the season today.  I tried Hay Creek and it was blown out.  Actually it wasn't half bad (it wasn't half good either) when I arrived at 10 am, the water was visibly rising in the two hours I tried to fish it.  Eventually I gave up and high-tailed it to the Whitewater in attempt to salvage the day.  While conditions on the Middle Branch were somewhat better than Hay Creek, it still wasn't good enough to produce fish.  I take that back.  I did "catch" one fish.  I somehow hooked a sucker right on the top of its head with my nymph.   At least I wasn't totally skunked.  Judging from the USGS data, it seems all SE streams are in the process of blowing out.

A little math:  (50 Degrees and sunny x 4 days) + 24 Inch snowpack = Really bad fishing.  Who knew!

Welcome to the forums Tacklebill and thanks for the report.

Did you fish the Middle Branch up past the park or in the park area?

When I was in the area on the first weekend of the Winter season, the water was visibly turning cloudier as soon as the sun hit the valley and fishing slowed down quite a bit, so I can imagine what it did with all the fresh snow and warm temps.

Tight lines.

I was upstream of the park.  After finally giving up on fishing, I used my time wisely and scoped out some other put-in spots on the North Branch and some smaller creeks in the area.  I'm only hoping the streams get back to normal before the end of the month.

Tacklebill,

I think we met at Hay. I was the zombie with the spinning rod. You've got more ambition than I. I went down stream to just see what it was like. Dirty Dirty Fast and hi. Nice day tough. I tried a big streamer on the fly rod. Still no luck. This snow should be melted off in a week or so. I think it'll be fishable well within the month. Anyone out there with an educated experianced opinion on when the SW streams will be back in buisness?

Jim

PS It was nice to meet you.

Yup, that was me. I think we were probably the only two idiots on the streams.  And Monday was much less about ambition but much more about cabin fever and having driven down from the Cities and not wanting to return empty handed.    As to when they might be fishable again,  I just look at the  USGS streamflow data.  It already looks like the Cannon River is going back down.  I'd bet Hay is acting pretty similar.

Tacklebill,

I did run into one other optomistic hopeful soul south of where I met you.

Maybe I'll give it a try early next week. I should try for WW. Who knows.

Good luck out there!

Jim
