SE Streams Report
 (United States)
Went down to Hay Creek this weekend and fished with perfect winter weather conditions but with less than perfect stream conditions.  The water was very high and more than a little cloudy.  The fish were pretty spooky as well and it was tough to see them due to murky water.  We managed a few small browns, but overall the bite was pretty scarce.  Hopefully the conditions will improve some soon.  You boys doing any good?

Those trout have been hit pretty hard. I was there Fri. Didn't get there untill after 1pm and ran across two others just while I was there. I know 2 others that where there Wed. and 1 other that went down Tues. So those trout are pretty wise too our ways. I wish there where other streams to try that where as close or closer. It is almost as close for me, to try the N. Shore. Maybe have to give the loopers a try. Kind of tough with a fly rod this time of year.

I made it out all day Saturday near the Whitewater area.  I decided to go out in the morning and fish all day.  The morning was warm with a slight breeze, but otherwise the big crowds were not out yet.  Around 10:00am is when I the hustle and bustle started.  Within an hour 6 anglers passed me going up river and I passed others while going back to my car.  I just couldn't believe the amount of fly fishers out on Saturday.  Granted it was a nice day and a weekend, but still were in January.  I saw more people in that one day, then I normally do when I'm down there for 3 days camping in the end of April early May, alright a little exaggerated, but you get the point.

I did catch quite a few fish between 4-8 inches, with just a couple around 10, but it was sporadic.  By 2:00 the area I was fishing started to get off color and assume it was from snow melt from the warming temps in the day.  The best action was right as the sun popped out and things started warming up.  I was using your standard nymph patters, PT's, hares ear, caddis, etc.  I took some film and will post it soon.  I basically BS'd with a few others down there, so that ate up my time, but I enjoyed it.  I witnessed some great fishing ethics while I was down there as well.

But it was great to get out and fly fish in the middle of Winter in January, it was a first for me.

Tight lines.

Re: SE Streams Report

Went down to Hay Creek today and actually had a good day of fishing despite high and cloudy water.  There was a good midge hatch going when I got there in the am, and I managed to catch a few on small (#18) griffith's gnats.  It was fun to fish dries again, but the real action was below the surface and I caught the majority of the fish on nymphs.  I caught a bunch on pink squirrels, and some more on small zebra midges.  None of the fish were huge (the biggest was probably 14"), but they were fun to catch.  After the midges shut down, I saw some black stoneflys buzzing around.  Seems weird to see so many bugs in March.  If you go, get there early and try fishing deep with a long leader.  Good luck!
