Whitewater SP Trip Report
 (United States)

Well after a lot of planning and hoping, and 2-3 dissappointments, I finally made my first fly fishing trip in minnesota.  I am  a novice fly angler with a few unproductive days in montana.  I went to whitewater with a positive attitude and great info I found on this site.  We stayed at the group camping area in the  south end of whitewater.  I fished a couple of hours friday night just getting a feel of the river and what not.  Spent more time untangling my lines and catching trees then anything, the river is tight.  The next morning I fished the main bridge on highway 74 to the group campground.  Saw a bunch of fish in the meadow area, very good scenery.  No fish were rising and had little idea how to get my line down, the water was about waist deep.  I happened to forget strike indicators, and my dry flies weren't big enough to stay up with the nymphs i was fishing.  Althogh I didn't get a hit in this area it was great, open casting,  great view of the canyon, plus i saw fish always good.  This was all the fishing I did on saturday, way too late of a night on friday.  Sunday  I awoke early for a great morning of fishing.  Walked to a slow moving pool and saw fish feeding at the surface, let my buddy have that pool and moved upstreatm 50 yards and again saw fish feeding at the surface.  What a great sight, I don't remeber being so excited.  Although I had now idea what to throw at them.  I know elk hair caddis are done, but I tied one on none the less and a few casts later, boom, there it was my first hit ever on a fly rod, sweet!!!!!  I let him take it and set the hook, and then it all went to hell, I found that my knot tying skills are piss poor, off went my fly and he was gone.  A few minutes later my buddy came up, and casted a bead headed pheasant tail, and caught a marvelous bow.  I think I was just as excited to see him catch it as if I would have- considering it was my hole.  Fished awhile longer, with no luck.  It was enough to bring me back I'll tell you that much.

Overall general experience was great, I saw fish, I saw fish rising, great scenery, and I got a hit.  It was really a good weekend.

Questions- how to fish the river mid-day.  I'm assuming the meadow portion of the middle branch would be hopper time in a few weeks???  Second, what to throw at rising fish early and late in the day during august and sept????

Thanks for everyones advice.

Re: Whitewater SP Trip Report

I get excited just reading your report on how you guys enjoyed the area .  Sounds like you both had a good time at Whitewater.  I always good luck fishing deep during the mid-day hours, but areas of alot shade can provide some top water action well.  But I find more fish and bigger fish in the deeper holes, fishing nymphs and larvae down deep with a split shot.  Enough split shot to get the fly down fast, but not to much where your dragging bottom. And of course using a strike helps out quite a bit. I know to some people it doesn't sound like traditional fly fishing, but if thats what the fish want, give it to them

Remember that the park area has seen quite a bit of fishing pressure already by this time of the year.  So they have seen quite a few flies and hardware coming past them, especially during the waking hours, when people are up, kids are fishing/swimming, etc.  So your best bet would be early morning or late evening.  Or get away from the crowds.  I remember the first few times I went down there, our group basically stayed the general area because we did not know enough of the surrounding areas and have a lot time to do some scouting.  But everytime we head down south, we get more adventurous and find newer entry points and even do a little more hiking.  It does sound like you guys were throwing the right stuff, you could trying smaller sizes, like 18 or smaller.  The fish feeding on the surface were most likely hitting tiny flies just under the surface or right on the surface, like midges.  You could even tie on a small wooly bugger or leech pattern and try to work for some of those bigger fish.  I remember cutting up some trout from the WW area for supper and found 2-3 inch crawfish in all the browns we caught.  These were not big browns either.

If hopper season is going good up in northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, it should be going already down there.  I usually head out for some hopper action mid/end July thru August.  Now hopper fishing is a blast!  You get some big explosions from some big fish during this time.

Thanks for the report Brando, I love reading other peoples fly fishing adventures!
