Minnesota fly fishing reports for all types of fly fishing in Minnesota. Please provide some helpful information about your trip to the waters so others might enjoy the same fly fishing outings. Whitewater State Park
 (United States)

Will be going this weekend and am looking for some info on which types of flies to use this time of year.  How is the fishing in the park proper and would it be a good idea to get out of the park??  Thanks in advance.

Brando check out this topic about Whitewater State Park.  Pretty much the same flies you'll be using down there.  You might want to throw in some hoppers as well, now that is a blast.

You can catch fish in the park and I know they stock that portion of river earlier in the year.  We would head down from the camp site after dinner and fly fish for a little bit before dark.  No waders, no vests, just enjoying the evening a little and were able to catch fish.

There is a group campground area on the southern western side of the park (you can see on the map) and park in that parking lot.  Go upstream from there and you'll start heading out of the park a little bit.  There is some easy wading and good fishing up that way.  Otherwise your in close distance to Trout Run Creek and the upper sections of the Middle and North branch of the Whitewater.  These are the areas I like.  Some of them take a hike to the water, but worth it to get away from the most fished waters.

You can also fish downstream from the park area all the way down to Elba and past Elba which hold quite a few fish.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

Thanks for the info, about the caddis larvae imitation flies- any specific name I should ask for at the fly shop???  I've never fished them or scuds so normal nymph rig with weight or something different???  Thanks again for your insight.

Hi Brando,

I know this is a little late, but I couldn't get back to a computer to respond to you before you went on your fly fishing weekend.  But I'll respond anyways.

There are alot of different names out there for caddis larvae imitation.  Just ask the fly shop for a caddis larvae imitation and they'll show you which ones they have.  They are pretty similiar on the look, basically a tiny buggy looking worm, some with visible segments and some not.  The scuds and caddis can be fished with or without a weight.  I always use a weight with a strike indicator, adjusting the indicator depending on the depth of the water.  I like using the weight because it gets the fly down fast in the water column where the fish are.  Just throw it just enough upstream so the fly will be deep by the time it gets to where the fish are holding.  Using a splitshot above the fly gets the fly down fast, plus it lets the fly naturally drift around in the current.

Did you get down to WW for some fishing?

Re: Whitewater State Park

Hello FlyMaster,

I am relatively new to Minnesota and would certainly appreciate any pointers for those "out of the way" spots you mention.  I prefer to get away from the pressured areas and I don't mind hiking a couple miles to get to the good spots.  I have done a lot of flyfishing in the rivers of Arkansas where I grew up, (and I might add the last 3 world record brown trout came from there also).  Now I am having to start all over finding some new favorite spots.  I am planning a backpacking/camping/flyfishing trip to the WW area in SouthEast MN.  Specifically I am looking at the Trout Valley Creek area just east of Minneiska.  Can you tell me anything about this creek and the Whitewater River in this area?  Does this part of the river see a lot of fishing pressure?  Any good camping spots?

I have been looking at some of the other posts regarding the North Shore rivers also and I am going to have to do some exploring in that area also.

Either direction is about the same distance from here in Saint Cloud.  There is really NOTHING around here that could be considered a trout stream, although the smallmouth fishing on the Mississippi is pretty good.

Again, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not sure fishing in the park proper is a good plan of attack considering how many other people (campers, hikers, and the likes) dabble in fishing there.  Your best bet is to get out and away from the park IMO.....that is unless you're looking for some stocked rainbows (which will be the case this weekend as the DNR always dumps in a fair share for the last hurrah).
