Hi people, I'm new to this site and enjoy fly fishing MN bluff country. Just want to post reports of my July 4th weekend trip at Whitewater. A few friends and I got there Sunday and camped till Monday in Whitewater State Park. We started off fishing in the State Park hoping to catch some stock Rainbows on dry fly thinking DNR might stock for the Holiday, but there was no sign. All we caught were small browns ranging from 5 inches to 8 inches and a few 12-14 inchers. So we decided to move on to the Middle Branch of Whitewater. We fished under the two county road 107 bridge and found many 12" + browns. As we drove by we notice tons of swallows flying over the surface of the water and trout rising. There was definetly a hatch but we couldn't distinguish what it was. After making our way under the bridge, I put on a size 18 parachute sulfur and caught an 18 inch brown with the first 5-6 casts. I was surprise that it didn't put up a good fight on my 3 weight TFO. I think someone might have caught it recently that day because it had a pretty big cut on its upper lip, it seems to be from a rooster tail or some sort of spinner. Throughout the couple hours under the bridge, we were catching browns averaging 10" plus on all different color patterns of size 18 parachute. It turned out to be a good day.
