winter kill?  (United States)

I realize it's early, but...

I've been out 3 times now fishing familiar water without seeing a single fish.  I'm talking about the upper reaches of North Shore streams (above barriers).  Looking for brookies. 

The bug activity has been real light, as well.  Haven't seen much crawling around on rocks, compared to previous springs.

I've heard folks talk about anchor ice and winter kill and I'm starting to wonder if it really happened last winter.

I'll keep at it, and hopefully as things warm up the fish will appear.

Just wondering if anyone else has been out.

Were the water levels lower than say in a normal wet year where you were fishing at?  Maybe they've moved to better deeper holding areas.

I know Miller Creek, well a small section near my house that I checked had anchor ice on it this year, which is in Duluth.  Lester River looked like it had some thick ice on it as well, but didn't know if anchor ice occurred on it.  With the low water levels we had last year and hardly no rain before the cold weather started did help much. 

Picked this off the internet for those of you wondering what anchor ice s.
anchor ice are most likely to form on a cold, clear night when the wind is strong, the humidity of the air is low, and the river is at minimum flow, especially if such a night follows a cold, windy, cloudy day.

anchor ice - Submerged ice attached or anchored to the river bed, irrespective of the nature of its formation. Western Lake Superior streams that lack springs can get so cold in winter that the a lot of ice can form on the bedrock bottom and destroy aquatic life and habitat.

water levels have seemed really low, but this was all before we got this rain.

I'm hoping this is just an early season slow spell but there was an article in Midwest FlyFishing where the Duluth & Grand Marais fisheries managers said they're expecting low numbers of inland brookies this year due to winter kill.
