spring fishing the northshore
 (N/A)

i have never fished the northshore only down in the southeast area. i heard the northshore area is quite beautiful but is it worth fishing in the spring? whats mainly gonna be biting? steelhead, brookies? and chance on a salmon. any pointers on which stream(s) to fish., no secret spot just a general direction would be greatly appreciated. When the best time in the spring to up there fishing?

thanks alot in advance, please excuse my ignorance

Almost all of the named streams along the North Shore have some kind of trout in them and these same streams most likely have a run of steelhead, just some rivers get bigger runs then others.  Most of the fishing in the spring is done for steelhead on the North Shore.  Mid April is when you can fish pass the first impassible barrier, get the North Shore Trout map from the DNR and it will list the barrier.  You still can fish for resident bows, brook, and browns from the barriers down to the mouth, but you will most likely fishing with steelhead fisherman as well.   There are a few salmon still swimming around, so you could hook into one of those fighting machines.

Fishing the spring runs is all about timing based on snow melt and rain.  These two impact the water levels and temperatures.  But generally April is considered the general month to fish the spring runs and can last thru May, but it depends on the weather.  If you want to stay close to Duluth, you can fish the Lester River, Sucker River and Knife River.  Also in front of the French River mouth can be awesome, but you can't fish in the river, this is where all the eggs are collected for stocking the rest of the North Shore streams.

Just be forewarned, spring is Steelie country on the North Shore, alot different then fishing spring fed streams of SE MN, but if your willing to hike away from the crowds and fish for some resident trout in the upper reaches, you could get rewarded.  One thing it is nice scenery and plus you don't have bugs to worry about in the spring either

Good Luck.

Thanks alot for the info! I cant wait to get some good spring fishing in. Being that I'm a Southern boy im ready for this snow to go away. These crowds you mentioned, how bad are they around the Duluth area?  Is it worth going on past Duluth to get away from the crowds?

The first river is Lester River, which right on the outskirts of Duluth.  Since it's fairly close it usually gets a crowd.  Naturally the further away you get the less anglers.  I would say when you start getting past Two Harbors up the shore, it thins out a bit.  The runs usually start with rivers near Duluth and work up the North Shore towards Grand Marais.  But then again it's all about timing the weather.  When the salmon were running in decent numbers you could get huge crowds, but the salmon are pretty much in the past, it's all about the steelhead.  Weekdays in the mornings were fairly quite, but you will still see other anglers out.  Most of the anglers are fishing for steelhead so they'll will be from the first impassable barrier downstream to the mouth.  On most streams the barrier is not far from the mouth, this is where you'll see most of the fisherman.  Past the barriers, the crowd thins out quite a bit, but then so do the steelhead :)

As the day goes on, the fish see alot more angler pressure, just like fishing any where.  There are days where you might hit the jackpot and catch 10 steelies in one hole, then not catch nothing for days.  Don't forget that your not just fishing with fly fisherman, but with all kinds of different techniques, so carving out a little spot to fly fish is tricky some days.  Don't get me wrong, steelies are a blast to catch, awesome fighting fish and the DNR has done a good job to keep the stock going.  It's just that you have to compete a little bit with all the other anglers trying to do the same thing.

Good luck out there.  You also have an option to hire a guide for a day, learn a few things, then take that knowledge and do it on your own.  Thats another option.

Sounds like a good time with a challenge. Ive though about hiring a guide just havent researched that far ahead yet. my fiance wants to come along to take pictures(shes a photographer) so its nice to take it at our own pace so i can help her out when she needs help. Im still a very novice flyfisherman, so even if i hired a guide it would take half the day just to get me casting a decentt presentation!!!!!! Anyways, thanks for the help. im already in a lot better shape due to this forum. keep up the good work.
