This is our attempt to give you good selection of flies you should have for catching a variety of species.  So you could call this a Multi-Species selection.

Fly fishing is not only about catching trout in a stream, but about catching fish on the fly.  Minnesota has many kinds of game fish to pursue, from catching panfish on a small pond, to catching 20lb Northern pike in the shallows.  It's your job to figure out how to catch them.

The amount of fly patterns is limitless, but like a lot of things, some flies become known throughout the fly fishing community as fish catchers.  Fly tiers create new flies all the time, some to share and some to keep a secret.  Many flies become popular in a local area, and then spread to other areas as fly fisherman use them on their local bodies of water.

Learning to tie flies is a great way to enhance your fly fishing experience and knowledge, not to mention a money saving way to keep your fly boxes full.  Fly tying is easy, and once you learn to tie a few basic patterns, the techniques you use will carry over to hundreds of other flies.  It's also a nice feeling when you fool a fish into eating something you created.  Check out our LINKS page for fly tying websites.
