Yay for pike!!!  (United States)

The pike have taken off this year!! I love it. I was wondering how the rest of you fish for them if you do fish for them? I have read Pike on the fly and Mastering pike on the fly, and still haven't had a bit of luck with a bunny leech.

I also fish for walleye and been doing pretty good there too. Curious if any body else fishes for walleye in MN(on a flyrod), and how they do it?

Re: Yay for pike!!!  (United States)

Clouser and some deciever for the pike and musky, as I remember it.

I was fishing a spillway in Kansas a few days ago, and was running into a similar issue of getting down far enough. I suppose I need to switch over the a sinking line with a heavier deciever. It is a different kind of flyfishing, or so it felt like. I am just learning though.

So I second the question.... How to fish for walleye? or fish a flyrod at a lower depth?

Re: Yay for pike!!!  (United States)

I use a 30ft sink tip 200 to 300 grain lines. 200grain on a six weight , 250 on a seven weight , and 300 on an eight weight. 3 ft flourocarbon leaders and weight or unweighted woolies, deceivers, etc. I usually do this when fishing spillways. Because all of these spillways are on the Missississippi river I can use 2 flies. Down here there are quite a few spillways, Wabasha, Winona, Pickwick, LaCresent, etc. Two of these produce walley, pike, drum, and catfish all year round. A person can catch close to a dozen different species in one outing. As an example my best day this year was white, yellow(rare,no state record yet!!!!), smallmouth, largemouth, and rock bass, catfish, drum, bluegill, mooneye, sucker, and pike.

It's fun not knowing what and how big the next fish on the line is.

Teeny lines are my favorite.
