Update : Beadalon wire for pike leader
(United States) Modified By TheFlyMaster on 6/4/2007 1:04:31 PM)

I been trying out Beadalon for use as pike leader and it works great.  I've been using the 49 strand 20lb.  I've had a few days when I had at least 5 decent sized pike and no break offs or kinkage of any kind off of one leader.  Obvisouly there were quite a few smaller hammer handles in the mix as well.  The leader held up very nicely, the coating never came apart, knots never came loose and it's cheap.  I tie on new mono leaders and wire everytime I go out, so it will save a bundle in the long run.

Beadlon 49 strand 20lb 30ft will run about $10.  Tyger Leader comes in a 49strand 30lb which much thicker then the 20lb Beadalon.  30lb Tyger 10ft is about $10.00

.33/ft or $1.00 a foot.

Don't mess with anything less then the 49 strand, much more kink resistant and easier to tie, unless your looking for something really stiff.

So this is tyable?

Blood knot to leader, clinch to fly?

Yes, it is completely tyable.  It's 49 strand wire so it's very flexible.  You can pretty much tie any knot you want, but it does have a very thin nylon coating over the wire, so you don't need a huge guady knot when tying to your fly.

What? Pike on a flyrod? Hootie Carson must be the King of Photoshop. Just kidding. We all know your a living Legend up North. I've heard all about it, while fishing the trout opener in Duluth last year. And I'll be back again in 2008. Maybe I'l actually catch something this year.

I used American Fishing Wire when I went back there last weekend and it worked great.  Picked it up at Thorne Brothers fly shop.  You can tie basically any knot with it because it's soooo flexible.  The nice part is I still have a ton left after my trip so I can use the rest for tandem streamers for the Truckee River.

tight lines!
