Smallies on the Root!!!
 (United States)
This week was great for smallies between Rushford and Lanesboro. I lost the largest one I have ever caught trying to get him in the net!!! UUUGGHH!!!! Over 18 inches probably over 20.
Still caught over a dozen each day. 2 over 16 inches!!!

Oh yeah, during all this there were many many groups of people floating by. Can be awkward and frustrating. This was on Monday and Tuesday.
So if your family is canoeing or tubing down the Root during the week and see one lone man waving his flyrod, tell them to say hi!!

Sounds like fun mnfishhunter!

Chasing smallies on the fly is a blast and my primary target.  I just can't get enough of them.  I still use my 8wt most of the time and 14 inches will put a nice bend in it and plus give you a good fight.  I still say a 14 inch smallie will put the smack down on a 18" largemouth anytime.

If anyone ever gets a chance to try fly fishing for smallies, be warned, because your trout rods may end up taking a back seat .  J/K, I still do my trout fishing because it's a whole different experience.

Tight lines!
