I'm just preparing to get back into fly fishing for trout again after a decade and don't really remember anything. I'm looking to head up to the North Shore this spring.

Does anybody have a good couple of standard flies they use that seem to come in handy in a lot of places? What would you say your "essential" dozen flies are for brookies and brown trout in the streams around Lake Superior? How about down south?

Hi Antioch and welcome.

Glad you want to get back into fly fishing.  You must be thinking of trout fishing along the north shore of minnesota.

The fly that I use the most is a small caddis larva imitation.  I like to use a tiny splitshot and strike indicator when i'm fishing it,  so I can get the fly down.

These are the flies that I use along the northshore for trout.

Caddis larva
Pass lake
Pheasant tail
Elk Hair caddis
Pink Squirrel

Thats it for me.  Now when it comes time for the big boys that makes the runs of the river, that is a different story.  There are alot of different flies people use when the salmon and steelhead run.

Good luck out there.  Don't forget there is a lot of good smallmouth opportunity in the Duluth area and up the north shore.  It's mainly untouched and there are alot of smallmouth.

Along with the flymaster's recommendations I would also bring wooly buggers in assorted sizes & colors.  There arent as many aquatic insects in the north shore streams so trout eat a lot of baitfish.  Terrestrials like ants, hoppers, and beetles will also work.  And of course, bring a bunch of hares ear, prince nymphs, and pheasant tails.  Good luck.
