Fishing subsurface flies in still water  (United States)

 I'm looking for some tips on fishing subsurface flies in still waters for warm water species.  I've had some success catching panfish, bass and carp on slowly retrieved nymphs, and I'd like some suggestions on patterns and presentations -- I'm pretty new to this!

 I probably should have been more specific -- I guess I'm particularly curious how you fish scud patterns and midge larvae like brassies in still water...
