Boundary Waters Canoe Area

I frequent alot of fly fishing forums, and for a board that frequents outside of trout, I am surprised to see nobody posts about the BWCA. I have never really been on that side of the state, but have always wanted to. From what I understand its a designated wilderness area of countless acres of pristine waters with many miles of streams most of which has not changed since the Voyageurs cargoed furs to various forts. For a pike and smallmouth fan, it seems like a good place to venture into for some primitive camping and canoe fly fishing. Anybody have any experience here? Or has it changed these recent years? Is it difficult to get back in there?

I camp up there at least once a year at least. The smallies, pike, and largemouth are unbeatable. The sheer numbers alone, then the size! I love the isolated pristine wilderness. $16.00 for a 10 day permit, that's hard to beat for camping and world class fishing in an unforgettable experience. I live in the south east of the state so everything is different up there.

You don't need to paddle that far in to have a great trip. I recommend getting away from any motor boat zones. In most cases a portage will take care of that. You can research the lakes for species, depth, and other info on MNDNR lakefinder website. There are alot of other websites that rate the portages, scenery, and the fishing in the BWCAW.

The fishing is excellent! I don't go all over the country or the world, but the numbers and the size are strong indicators in any situation. Also the scenery is awesome!!!

I take the north shore up (61) to 1 and cut across to Ely or stay on 61 to Grand Marias. In any case a great drive up!!!

Take lots of pictures of everything!!! It's a great experience, I would do it alot more if I could.
