Seeking Rod Advice
 (United States)
I am moving from Virginia to Minneapolis at the end of the summer and am unfamiliar with the trout waters in the area.  I am looking to buy a new rod, but I am uncertain whether I should purchase a 9' rod or something shorter like an 8' or an 8'6".  I am interested primarily in trout fishing.  Are the waters large enough to warrant a 9' or would a shorter rod be more advisable?  Thanks.

That depends on where you plan on fishing. You will most likely be spending some time on the trout streams in the southeast corner of the state, so shorter rods are advisable. Especially in the summer, when vegetation grows along the banks. If you are headed north to Duluth, you'll be on rivers and lakes for a variety of species, so a longer rod would be advisable. I would shop around before buying, as there are some good deals out there.

Re: Seeking Rod Advice

I moved here from Idaho 15 years ago and brought with me my 6 wt. 9' rod. I am used to it and it works fine. I think the extra length works well in SE MN. I can back cast high over the weeds by lifting my arm to clear them. I do not feel disadvantaged at all. Also, when you're in tight corners, you have a little more length to "drop" the fly line in a stretch. I bought my daughter a shorter rod - she's at a disadvantage I think. I traded with her yesterday at one stretch and couldn't wait to get back to my 9'. I also like a heavier line because I can cast bigger flies / nymphs easier. I think a person just gets used to what they have. I know there will be a time and place where I use her shorter lighter rod, but I haven't found it yet.
