Re: New to Minnesota

I'm quite partial to the Sherburne, Wright and Stearns counties region.  There are a lot of lakes out there that fish very well.  Smallmouth on the Mississippi from Elk River to St Cloud are fun.  If you're looking for big fish head to Sugar Lake in Wright,  good Muskie, Northern and Bass action.  Check fishing reports and also go to Thorne Brothers fly shop and talk to the guys there.
tight lines!

Re: New to Minnesota

Welcome to Minnesota Fivel.  Well, Montana is pretty hard to beat for trout, but we do have some quality streams in this area that are worth taking a look at.  It's closer to Eastern fishing out here, so our trout run small, but are aweful plentiful.  I caught 24 on Hay Creek on Sunday but the biggest was a 12 incher.  Google Minnesota Trout Unlimited and sign up for thier forum and you'll get alot more information on trout.  To get you started the premier streams around here are mostly in Wisconsin, but The Kinnickinick river is only about 45 minutes from the metro depending on where you live.  Just over the border in River Falls is a really good place to fish.  Most of that river has 8000 trout per mile with certain sections at 10,000.  Glen Park inside River Falls is a bit crowded, but you'll be able to get a section to yourself.  Make sure to eat at Steves Pizza and call em all a buch of Mahlockas.  The Rush River in Wisconsin has some bigger trout if you want to drive a bit more.  The problem is an out of state year round WI license costs $70 bucks so if you scoff at such injustice as I do you'll have to stay in state and pay $17.  In Minnesota you have a range of places.  Hay Creek outside Redwing has some good fishing (I'm just discovering it myself) about 50 minutes from my place in Saint Paul.  Most of the best streams are in the South East, and the majority of them feed the Root River.  Check out the Minnesota DNR website and you'll find maps that show public easements and designated trout water in the South East, here is a link http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fishing/trout_streams/index.html.  Trout Run Creek in the South East is one of our best, as well as the South Branch of the Root River.  It may not be the Big Horn or the Yellowstone but we have some pretty little places to fish.  You can fish the main branch of the root for Smallmouth as well and thats a ton of fun on the fly.  This should be enough to get you started, and check out the MNTU site.

Good luck and tight lines
