Hi aggirl and welcome to the forums.

Midwest can mean alot of states in that group.  But I would assume MN, WI, IA, IL, SD, ND, MI as midwest?

This would be my list in no particular order.
Black Hills of SD.
SE MN, SW WI, NE IA, the whole bluff country area.
Brule River in Northern WI because it's the Brule....
Iron County, Upper UP of MI area.  Awesome salmon and trout streams.

Re: Midwest Best Trout Fishing Destinations
 (N/A)
Hi Aggirl

First two are the same

Black Hills South Dakota:  Beautiful scenery, western style fishing, really good populations of trout, including naturaly reproducing rainbows.  Once again beautiful scenery.  Spearfish Creek is my favorite, but Rush is also nice.

Driftless area/bluff country, Southeast MN, northeast Iowa, western wisconsin:  This is a huge complex of streams, with literaly hundreds of trout streams.  It is the most beautiful part of Minnesota in my opinion, no offense to the North Shore fans.  Some of these streams are undoubtedly blue ribbon.  Parts of the Root river complex, Trout Run Creek, and the Kinnie in Wisconsin are all some of the nicest trout streams I've ever fished.

Fox River, UP Michigan:  This  is one of the classic midwestern streams.  This is probably the river that Hemmingway wrote about in the stories Big Two Hearted River I and II, (he named it after the nearby Big two hearted because he didn't want his favorite spot crowded).  The  fishing isn't as good as it was in Papa's days, but it is still world class, full of some of the best fish in the midwest.  Cold water, wonderful hatches, some classic dry fly flats, and a ton of character.  Plus it's full of wild native brook trout.

I'm not super enthusiastic about anything else in the midwest.  If I had to pick I'd go with the North shore streams, or the Au Sable in Michigan.  Anyway, the first two are the easiest, and the third has alot of history I appreciate, but the midwest is not the nicest place for trout.  We are lucky here in MN to have the little oasis of the driftless which is worthy of destination fishing.  I could pick a few of those rivers and streams specificaly.

Hope this helps.
