Honeymoon trip

Well I have a few more months before I put the real ring on her, and afterwards i have talked her into going a roadtrip.  The roadtrip will consist of flyfishing, a little backpacking, and some photography. We plan to take off from Minnesota and head West  with either these two routes.... Mn to ND to MT to ID and into WA or MN to SD to WY to ID to Oreagon and then WA.  The question is which route should i take? I want to fish nice big scenic rivers and creeks, wading, and using mostly drys and nymphs. Which rivers are a must in those states?   Its a big question and any input would be great. I have never fished out west but have always wanted to.

This forum is about as active as a beach & swimwear shop in the Arctic.

My advice is to drive towards Montana.  Lots of opportunities in that state.  When you get there stop at a few local fly shops in the area and ask them where they suggest or pre-plan and stop at Bentleys Fly Shop (or call them) here in Minnesota and ask where they suggest you stop based on your initial travel route.  Use the resources you have available.

Northhike is right, Montana does have alot of wonderful rivers, but so does Wyoming.  Another thing to take into consideration is that the first real good trout streams out west are in the Black Hills area of South Dakota.  North Dakota is a bit of a wasteland in regard to trout, and scenery for that mater.  The Black Hills are a real cool place to fish, and I had a chance to do a little fishing on Spearfish Creek last year, and loved it.  It was very scenic and I took good pictures, and got to fish on a stream that had a much more western feel than around here.  Bigger flies, bigger fish, and freestone creeks at higher altitudes.  Lots of hiking trails, and sights as well with Deadwood being a cool old west town (The last brothel was finally removed in the 80s).  You could hit Yellowstone or the Snake in Wyoming, or one of a dozen lesser known rivers.  A good book for you to check out would be So Many Fish, So Little Time by Mark D. Williams.  It's a list of great fishing in the world, and the author is a fly fisherman from Texas (that state gets a bit more mention than it deserves as a result).  It gives specific locations broken down by state, and could be a valuable resource.  In Montana you have the Bighorn and Blackfoot which are both amazing, plus a myriad of lesser known rivers.  Big water, scenic views, much of what you are looking for.  In Wyoming you get Jackson Hole, and the South Fork of the Snake, plus Yellowstone with the Firehole, Madison, and a whole slew of other great fishing spts.  You can plan your trip as legs between scenic areas, first leg to Black hills, second leg to Yellowstone, then further west.  Montana objectively has more to offer, alot more, but you'll have a hard time doing it all.  Either way your going to have to go through the Eastern Dakotas which are a wasteland.  Driving across Nodak is unadulterated hell if you ask me.  Sodak isn't much better till you reach the Mo, but at least you get to stop at Wall Drug.   You could wake up and fish your second day if you do the South Dakota route.  Both have advantages.  Just some stuff to think about.
