Summer Flyfishing in MN
 (United States)

Hello, and thanks ahead of time for all of your input.  I live in Washington and have family in the Minneapolis/WhiteBear area and am planning on visiting next summer.  I'm planning on driving from WA to MN, taking a couple of weeks and fishing.  What time of the year (part of the summer) should I plan on making the trip?  I have fished in lat summer on the Root River a number of years ago, and remember thinking that the water was a bit too warm to ensure survivability from catch/release trout fishing.  I am much more of a trout fisherman than a bass/pike/muskee fisherman, but am willing to learn.

as always

peace and love

Re: Summer Flyfishing in MN

Truth be told the "spring" (April / May) is the best time to be out trout fishing in Minnesota.   Summer can get real hot here and fishing is slow and miserable in the heat.  In early July you get a nice Trico hatch, but you better be on the water before first light.  There is a small window of opportunity.

The next best time is Fall (Sept. / Oct.).  The weather cools down and the fishing picks up again.

Well, since I wont be around for the January 1st Winter Trout season, I have to wait until July and fish Duluth. Here is my fishing schedule for 2008 so far: March 10th- Missouri Opener, Rainbows-Roaring River State Park (stocked) End of April/May - Baby is due (Rainbows-more stocked local KC lakes) July- Duluth, MN - Anything! September- White River, AR Massive Browns http://www.arkansasstateparks.com/bullshoalswhiteriver/ October- Southeast Minnesota (Rainbows) So no trips to the Florida Keys, or Montana, but enough to keep busy. Anyone else have anything in the works?

Re: Summer Flyfishing in MN
 (N/A)
I'm headed to yellowstone in 2008.  Planning on fishing Cache Creek, Black Canyon of the Yellowstone, Gallatin River, and Obsidian Creek, and probably Indian Campground Creek because we'll be right next to it one of those nights. I plan on hitting more Spring Creeks in Minnesota, and also going to try and hit the Kinnie in WI for some brown trout action.  On certain stretches I've heard numbers as high as 8,000 trout per mile.  Summer is a great season to hit the spring creeks because they have a constant source of cold water.  It's smaller water, but you can have a go at the western most population of wild native brook trout on some of the little creeks.  The MN DNR website has really excellent maps  that give species and if they are wild or stocked, and also gives the location of fishing easments which makes access clear.
