Some guidance, please . . .
 (United States)
It doesn't look like this board gets a lot of traffic, but it's the only one I can get on right now.  I'm a rookie at this fly fishing sport, and I'm slowly getting the gear together.  I just haven't had time to get on the water, yet.  A friend who is going to help me learn the sport will not be able to do much 'til next season, but I have time now to get to some streams before the season ends.  The most logical place for me seems to be the Red Wing area (Hay Creek, etc.), but since I'll be going alone, I really need some advice about which areas might be OK for a beginner.  So here are my questions:

1.  Which streams would be the best for beginning?  If I do Hay Creek, are there access points that would be better than others?  Is there any special gear that I will need other than the standard fly gear (I'm fairly well outfitted)?

2.  Any general tips in terms of flies?  I've done a lot of reading, but I need to get some water time to apply what I've read.

3.  Anything to stay away from?  What should I watch out for?

I don't expect anyone to give up their secret or favorite spot - I just need a place where I can see what the line does in the water.  I would also like to be able to see how trout react to the different types of feeding that they do.  Mostly, I just want to get started before the season ends.

And advice/help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Dean
