New Guy Needs Help
 (United States)
Hello - I've got some new gear and I'm ready to fish, but I have no idea where to go.  I've only been out once, and that was in CO with family.  I live in St. Paul and I am wondering if anyone has advice on a good spot for beginners.  Any advice on fly fishing on area lakes and on the Mississippit would be welcome, too.  I'm also new to the area and have very little knowledge about access points, parks, etc.  I appreciate the help.  Have a great Fourth of July.

pretty much any lake arounf is great for leaning to fly fish around here, my suggestion would be to go to the DNR website and  use their lake finder feature.  it will give you a topo map of the lake and the depth of the lake, they usually have where the dock is also and if it is motorized or not.  If it is trout you are after, try the vermillion river down by farmington, or go across to wisconsin to the kinnikinic river in river falls, WI.  The kinni is a great place to learn, many different types of water in one river.  I would suggest buying a book called "Trout Streams of Minnesota and Wisconsin"  if you want to fish for trout.  It has maps of the river, overview of what flies to use and hot spots.   Try going to either Bob michells fly shop in lake elmo of Bentleys outfitters in bloomington also, both place are extremely friendly and will tell you everything you need to know about fishing around here. Hope i am of some help to you

Welcome AlamoJack and ebbebeb to the forums.

Those are some great suggestions and starting points ebbebeb.  I have a binder that I keep of lakes I want to try and laks that I have tried and use the printouts from the DNR Lake finder, along with the creel survey they do on lakes.  You have to take the creel surveys with a grain of salt, because there are too many factors that come into play when they trap net or seine.  But they do give you a great general feeling about a lake and what to expect.  Their website is http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/lakefind/index.html

I second the book that ebbebeb mentioned, good starting points as you learn your local water and what wisconsin and minnesota have to offer.
