good pattern for selective trout?
(United States) Modified By UpStream on 6/4/2007 3:08:53 PM)
I was fishing a stream earlier this week and had some great fishing. Trout were tailing, feeding subsurface, and later in the evening they were jumping out of the water. I actually caught one on the jump as the fly was coming down to the water surface! It was some incredible fishing.
The trout were extremely selective. They were feeding everywhere and some were just a rod length away. Many of them ignored my flies. I must have switched patterns 8 times before dialing in. All the while with rings and splashes around me.
I first tried some nymph patterns letting them run across and down though the faster water, but they weren't interested.
Later I swicthed to an adams and caught a couple, but they were mostly still feeding subsurface.
Then I switched to a #18 trico spinner (black body with white wings) and started having more success, but I was having trouble detecting the take.
Later I switched to a tiny olive dun and had the most success. I added the trico dropper a few inches below and had many looks and many takes.
The fishing was great - but it seemed like I was one fly pattern away from trout nirvana.
Does any one have a pattern for these tiny white flies (dry and emerging)???
