Beginners information?
 (United States)
Nathan Hansen

A new MN fly fisherman here looking for a good teacher or class to hone the beginners tips I have picked up from friends, etc.  Any suggestions?

Hi Nathan and welcome,

Where do you live in Minnesota?  I know a few places around the Duluth area.

I would suggest that you check out your closest fly fishing shop.  Most offer some kind of basic to advanced classes for fly fishing or can point you to another fly fisherman that is willing to teach.

Good fly fishing instructors are usually certified under the Federation Of Fly Fishers Casting Instructors program.  There are different levels among FFF teachers as well.  FFF also has local clubs through out the state.  You can get more infor here http://www.fedflyfishers.org

I've met a few FFF members who were not certified but we able and willing teach people the basics of fly fishing.

Or just get out and fish with someone thats has some fly fishing experience and has some patience and willingness to teach.

I've done it myself a few times with friends and it's a blast when they make that perfect cast and catch a fish on their first day.

Maybe I need to take a class or two? Whatever it takes.

Anyone have suggestions for battling the Minnesota State Bird (mosquitoes) while fishing?

I am concerned that a spray repellant may ruin my fishing, Maybe this unfounded?
