Winter Trout Season! question?
 (United States)
I've never been a cold weather fisherman, but I think I might get an opportunity to try SE Minnesota for some winter season fly fishing.

Will I be using nymphs and scuds pretty much the whole time?  I guess at this time of year you could still possibly get some midge hatches going on as well, if the weather is right that is.

Does anyone have a few tips on what I need to bring before I take the plunge at winter fly fishing?

Tight Lines.

Hmmm, strange it says Mark had responded, maybe the forum was acting up again.  Can you report your comment Mark...any tips would be welcome

Montana transplant here looking for the same information.  REALLY anxious to get out and suck the ice out of my guides.  One can only tie so many flies in the winter before he gets a little cabin fever!

Me and my friend have been goin down S.E. for 3 - 4 years now and I can tell you it is a blast. Went down this weekend and did very well, caught mainly bows in the 14 - 16 inch range and a few smaller browns. Most fish were caught on beadhead nymphs size #18 and smaller, one fish caught on a bwo. Anytime the temps stay up in the mid thirties fishing can be excellent. I was surprised how many guys were out this weekend (10 -12 other anglers) but it doesn't even compare to the summer time maddness! Look forward to going back next week, temps expected to stay in the thirties! My must have piece of equipment in the winter is a good pair of neoprene waders and also get some ice spikes to slip on over your boots!

Thanks for info Dale.  And I know what you mean about the summer months

I'm going to try to get a couple of days to go down there, hopefully when I go, the weather will be nice as well.  I can only hope.

I've done some early openers in northern wisconsin while it was still cool and snow on the ground.  Nobody around and very peaceful.

Hi MikeClarke and welcome to Minnesota Fly Fishing!

Good luck out there and let us know how you did.  So for those of us who don't get a chance to get out fly fishing can enjoy it from a distance

Is anyone going to get on the 24th or 25th.  I might be nice to hook up with someone that might be in the area or point me in the right direction.

Skunked?  Yep.  Beautiful day but didn't do too well.  It was the first time to the SE so I guess we have that excuse.  Great water but crystal clear, fish easily spooked.  Will go again for sure.
