Salmonids near St. Paul?  (United States)

Will be at a conference in Mid-April in St. Paul, and would love to do some fly fishing for trout, salmon, (or lord knows what) if at all possible.  I know almost nothing about the area, but have been fly fishing for many years.  Anyone have any recommendations about likely creeks within an hour or two of the city?  Any advice about good source books would be welcome too...

Thanks in advance!

Hi pickerel, In April you will have to venture about 2 hours more north to get into some of our steelhead, maybe some Coho, here on Lake Superior in Duluth MN. Give me a call or check out my web page at WWW.Greatlakesflys.com 218-740-3040. John

Re: Salmonids near St. Paul?  (United States)

For salmon your going to need to head the Duluth, MN area on either the North Shore streams or the South Shore streams of Lake Superior like the Brule River.  Streams on the north shore and south shore are open for fishing in April.

If you want trout, then you could possibly head to SE Minnesota, basically east of the city of Rochester.  Whitewater River State Park and it's tribs are good bets for that.  Depending on where in St. Paul but you could get to a good fly fishing stream in less then 2 hours.  There are some streams directly east of St. Paul over in Wisconsin like the Kinnickinnic River which are fairly close.

As for books I like Humphrey's book on Minnesota and Wisconsin Trout streams.  I still use it alot for exploring.  The authors give you just enuf for you to try it on your own.  It's a good read as well.

Any pink salmon runs?  I hear about them every now and again, I believe from that area?

Pink salmon are out, they run in the fall on the North Shore.  It was me I would probably would head to the SE Minnesota area.  Most streams have easy access and are fly fisher friendly and oh yeah, the scenery not bad either
