Hare's Ears and Midges
(United States)
Caught a few trout this morning in the sprinkles. Grouse were beating and a turkey made an appearance. I settled into the river and disrupted a Great Blue Herring's hunt. A gold ribbed hare's ear seemed to be the ticket on the cuts and pools. The trout were feeding subsurface on something. I tied on a midge and had great success casting up and across to the subtle rings.
The final fish was about 14 inches and scrappy. Another good morning.

Good to hear you had some success Upstream.
I was on the Rush yesterday and had some good fishing.
Started around 9am and ended at 4:30pm.
They were feeding sub-surface all morning in slower water. I had little success presenting the right fly, or look until I started working the faster runs and shoots. I switched to some midge and bluewing olive parachute patterns, letting them swing through stronger current....fish would strike near or at the end of the swing. I also had may strikes while slowly stripping line.
I too saw them sipping at the surface later in the day, I think they were picking at dislodged stonefly larva and various emergers. I never saw a hatch of signifigance..a few larger caddis, some bluewings, and assorted midges.
Good day fishing, and I can;t wait to get back.

Re: Hare's Ears and Midges

I should clarify that the midge I had on was an emerger and was drifting just under the surface. I was casting upstream and slightly across to spots with mild "sipping" ripples. The takes were super subtle and almost immediate if it drifted into the "feeding lane". It was a ton of fun. I hope to get out tomorrow. It's suppossed to be chilly.
