New to the area...  (United States)

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the area, going to school in Winona, and was thinking about getting started fly fishing again. I'm originally from the Twin Cities and have some fly fishing experience on Lake Minnetonka for mostly sunnies and crappies, but have never fished for trout before.

I have a St. Croix Reign fly rod, 7'6" 4-line weight, 3.0 oz, with a Scientific Anglers model 456 reel. This seemed to work pretty well for the small fish on Lake Minnetonka I caught, but would it be a good setup for the trout of SE Minnesota?

How big do the trout usually get around here? What I'm going to school for has taken me around the bluffs and into nearby streams, so I feel good that the shorter fly rod would be best, but what would anyone else suggest? I've looked for tips on what to buy to fish for trout, but they always use the terms big, medium, and small in reference to the size of fish you will be catching. Are the trout in SE Minnesota considered small, medium, or large in terms of trout size?

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Re: New to the area...  (United States)
3 and 4 weights are typical in SE MN, so you should be all set with the rod you have.

A typical SE MN fish is around 10 inch.  However there are decent numbers of 16+ inch fish and occasional 20+ inch fish around.

Re: New to the area...  (United States)
I haven't fished allot in the SE but when I have, the fish I caught were on the small to medium size and the fishing equipment you described would work just fine.I usually use a 9'5wt but it gets a little tight on some of the creeks that I occasionally fish. Works fine on the root river where I have room to cast.It is a beautiful area and I have had decent fishing in the rivers and streams of the driftless region of SE MN.

The St. Croix rod that you described is good enough for what you will encounter in southeast Minnesota.  Larger watersheds like the Root are better suited for longer rods for distance and mend, although I was using my 7'10" 1 weight on it at times this fall for some evening dry fly action.
