Float the Root River lower sections ?
(United States) Modified By TheFlyMaster on 7/31/2008 9:52:47 AM)

Does anyone know about where the border (vaguely) from when the river turns more into a warm water fishery?  I've seen it below Lanesboro and above.  I'm thinking about bringing my Dave Scadden Northfork pontoon float boat next month and thought I would try floating the Root for some smallies or whatever.  Plus do some trout fishing on the streams.

I'll be camping at Whitewater Park which have done many times.  But I usually do the trout thing, but thought I would bring the big sticks out for some warmwater action.

Anyone know of a good all day float on the Root?  Preferrably less then a 8 mile run or shorter and some decent areas to get out and wade a little.

Thanks for any input and tight lines!

2 options. get ahold of dave anderson(D.A.). he knows the smallies down there as well as anyone. good guy too.

call steve klotz at the lanesboro fisheries. tell him you know me( josh). he is also a big smallie guy. he may be willing to trade some info.

The root starts to get warmer at about the confluence of the North and Main Branches.  Anything downstream from there is going to be warmer, though you will still run into browns for a few miles downstream.  I'd suggest putting in at Whalen and floating the section down to Rushford for a start.  It's a wonderful stretch of river, and the last time I floated it I saw lots of smallie action including some topwater strikes, so I know that there are a bunch of them in there.  I don't know the exact distance in river miles, but there are lots of pullouts in that area.  You could do the entire float from Lanesboro to Rushford and start out targeting trout then switch to smallies as you get downstream, but its pretty rough in Lanesboro.  There is a public access that is a couple miles east of Lanesboro, and from that point on its a nice easy float, and that might be your best bet.  If your interested in trout, try the North Branch.  It dosen't get near as much pressure as the South Branch, or other parts of the Root, and despite not being classified as trout waters I've seen some monster trout in that section.  Guy at Bob Mitchells said the smallie action was good there too, but my impression was that it was too cold for smallies.  The North Branch has some wonderful scenery, and if you put in off Highway 21 and float it down to Eagle Bluff Campground they will shuttle you back for $10.  You probably know about this site, but if not here is the link for the DNRs canoe route map.  http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/maps/canoe_routes/root.pdf

I'd float from Chatfield to Lanesboro.  Lots of smallies, plus there are many little spring creek tribs to try your hand at some trout also.
