Looking for some advice around white water state park?
 (United States)
I have just started fly fishing this summer. I have been up here in Rochester since about feb for some treatments at mayo. Fly fishing has been keeping me very busy! Any ways i have been to white water about 4 different times with not much luck. I was wondering if anyone could lead me in the right direction on what flies i should be using right now and give the full name of the fly so i can find it or atleast find out what i need to tie it. (I also have started tying, very fun!) I have read over some other threads about white water but i dont know where the middle branch is and such. I am pretty new to the area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and feel free to shoot me a email!!

bugs on the WW are a weird thing right now. the flood last august tore stuff up pretty good, and the inverts haven't really bounced back tey. not enough veg for the scuds, etc...

try the south branch if yer set on WW, or north of the park. but get the dnr trout stream map. check out the south branch of the root, and trout run down near pilot mound. much better water right now in my opinion.

I am going to be fishing there in Sept when I move my daughter back to college. I was worried about having the right flies, but it sounds like I'll stick with what I use in Missouri.

Try a Black Wet Fly -- http://www.ontheflyguiding.com/images/Fly%20Pattern%20Pages/black_wet_fly.htm.  This fly imitates a drowned beetle or cricket and is an absolute killer fly on area streams at this time of year and has worked well for me in the park area in recent weeks. Fish it deep under an indicator with some weight on your tippet like a standard nymph.

BTW, I was going tyo dropyou an e-mail butyour e-mail isn't visible inyour profile.  Shoot me an e-mail if youwant some more advice.

A few pieces of advice.  First, this is the website for the MN DNR that has unbelievable maps of Whitewater, and other really nice streams in the area.  http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fishing/trout_streams/south_mn_maps.html  You can fish any of the public easements that are listed in these maps, and there are lots of wonderful creeks that are included.  As far as flies, learn to tie the Bead Head Prince Nymph.  It is a general attractor and will catch flies on pretty much any water, pretty much any day.  Also the Pheasant tail nymph.  If you do a #14 Bead head prince, and then tie a 1 foot section of tippet to the hook shank using an improved clinch knot, then tie on a #18 pheasant tail, you'll catch fish.  Stretch your legs a little bit and check out some of the streams in the Lanesboro region.  They are beautiful, and productive, and many of them have wild fish.  I'd suggest going out and getting a few books.  Flyfishers guide to Minnesota by Mickey O. Johnson lists some of the good productive waters, and has hatch charts that show the bugs that hatch in the area, and the flies that can be used to immitate them.  Anyway, hope that helps.  Good luck.

My email is lmoore1896@gmail.com please email me if you would like i would love to hear anything about whats going on on the streams. As for the reading too i have read a few books in my spare time but i will for sure check out Mickey o. Johnsons book. I am looking to head out fishing tomorrow afternoon and Thursday if the docs will leave me be for a bit. Thanks again and shoot me a email anytime!

Some good books from a tying and fishing flies angle for the Midwest are Ross Mueller's two books.  Otherwise, get the DNR Easement booklet and do some exploring.  It lists all the streams in southeast MN.
