Fished the Middle Branch of Whitewater on Saturday.  Took some 9-12 inch browns, and a few bows, 8 in all.  Some great riffles and pools were created by the terrible flood last year.  Fish looked to be rising to midges/bwo's.  Are bwo's hatching elsewhere?  Not alot of rises, so I took to nymphing a pair of scuds, with favorable results.  Anyone been to Wisel(weisel) Creek?

I saw some smallish BWOs in the lanesboro region a couple weeks ago.  Last year I didn't get out til memorial day, but they were pretty omni-present after that, and always a good searcher dry in these parts.

baetis( bwo's) are pretty much there all the time 'cept for a stretch in july/ part of aug. bwo's on cloudy days, caddis on sunny one's, right?

Fished some of the middle and south forks last Sunday. Still pretty dirty then from all the rainfalll the previous week. Beaver Creek was more clear, but a much smaller stream. Last Thursday, Hay Creek (Red Wing) was pretty clear in the morning, then it rained and the stream turned into coffee and cream shortly thereafter. See what happens with rain this week. I think it's not so much a matter of "what's a good spot?" as much as it is "what's clear?" I used bead-heads and some peacock bodied nymphs. A few fish started to rise about 5:00 pm. For me, fishing was very slow, but it's always fun to try.

I have mid-week trip planned to Whitewater in September after taking daughter to college. Staying in campground. Would appreciate tips for trout fishing in Minnesota. I fish a few times a year at Montauk State Park in Missouri. Peacock with black bead head is my favorite fly of choice at Montauk. I assume there are good spots to wade.

Hi Chas.  The Whitewater is a fairly small stream (as are all of the SE MN trout streams), so you'll have no problem with wading.   

Standard trout nymphs -- Hare's Ears, PTs, and scuds (orange and pink) -- will cover most of your needs.   You might run into some BWOs at that time of year, so I would have a few BWO dries and emergers on hand.   A couple of other "local" flies that are worth having on hand are the Pink Squirrel and Black Wet Fly. 

The PS has a couple strands of Krystal Flash for a tail, rusty brown dubbing with wire rib for abdomen, bright pink vernille or dubbing for a thorax and brass beadhead. 

The BWF sounds similar to the fly you mentioned -- black dubbing body with black mylar braid shellback and black hen hackle.  It's intended to imitate a drowned beetle.

Thanks for the information. We really had a great weekend fishing at Montauk State Park (near Salem, MO) this past weekend. They had a huge flood in February and March that really changed the river (the Current River starts in the park). All the vegetation is gone. So you could really see the fish but it made for some tough fishing. They hit on puff balls (which I hate fishing with) in the fly only area. I am eager to try my luck in MN. I suppose there is somewhere near Whitewater to pick up a couple flies?

not that i know of. gander in Rochester. if yer in the cities bob mitchells is a great flyshop.

Unlike some places, we have way more streams than fly shops.   I'm not sure of your travel route plans, but would guess there's a good chance you'll betraveling through Rochester along the way. So Gander Mountain in Rochester (just off of US 52 at 55th St NW) is probably your best bet.  They have a fly shop area and you can probably get some local advice.   Rochester is about 25 miles west of the Whitewater area. 

There are lots of great streams in the area besides the Whitewater system.   If you've got the time and inclination, check out some of the other streams at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/fishing/trout_streams/south_mn_maps.html.

BTW,what's a "puffball" -- is that an egg fly?

Go to Elba, MN...it's just east of Whitewater State Park. There is a gas station(only one in town) that has a great selection of flies(just about same price as Gander), tackle, and bait. Buy plenty as Whitewater is fairly small and heavily wooded, you will lose flies. Good luck. There are a few places in the park that are heavily stocked and make sure you go to the park shop and get a parking pass as they will ticket you w/out one.

i stopped by that gas station( which is north of the park btw) and they had a few leaders, no tippet, and a couple generic flies. tons of spinner crap though. best bet is gander. cute college girl working there though.

I will try Gander. I was surprised to find out about a $5 a day parking pass. I am staying 3 days in the park so that will be $15.00 plus the camping fee. I am spoiled at camping in Missouri. 8 bucks for basic camping and no parking fee.

get the annual pass the, pays for itself. i personally don't mind the fee. MN has some of the best maintained parks anywhere. and they are grossly underfunded by the fat cats in St. Paul.
