Tiger Trout
 (United States)
Several firsts for me today. 1.) a client caught a tiger trout 2.) both clients caught separate tiger trout 3.) the first tiger trout I have seen caught live and in person (I have yet to pull this feat off myself).

So is that some sort of hybrid, or are these stocked or some exotic species of trout?  I've never seen or heard of them before?

Welcome huntercooper!

It's a hybrid, cross between a brown trout and brook trout and quite rare.  Even more rare to get more then one in the same day, let alone get one for an entire fishing season.  It's also like the tiger muskie (musky and northern pike) and many other types of cross breeds.  I can't remember if they are naturally produced this way, but I think it's more of hatchery raised thing.

Good job D.A.

since tiger trout can not reproduce, i think it is a natural thing. i can't see the dnr monkeying around with that.

I didn't mean that the DNR was doing the cross breed, but that occurrence of a accidental cross breeding would more likely happen at the hatchery, then stocked into the streams.  Just think that it wouldn't occur in the stream itself, not to say it can't, but highly unlikely.  Either way it's a rare catch.

Re: Tiger Trout

Just a new guy to the website; Tiger Trout are a cross between a male brookie and a female brown. They are a natural produced fish but will not reproduce...as told me by a MN DNR fish biologist. I caught an 17 3/4" Tiger on the morning of my best friends wedding day. Kind of wife a man dreams of!
I would have had the MN record at the time for this species, but later that summer a guy caught an 18+ Tiger...SOB !!!!!

Anyway, thats good to hear there are some left, its a sign of a healthy stream!

Don't forget to kiss your fish...It's just GOOD KARMA !!!!!
