Pretty quick thinking Bill. I just added a 6 pack of multi-colored sharpies to my vest...
I know what you mean. I was in the SE on Sunday, lots of midges early in the am. Then the caddis turned on as it got a little warmer (blacks, like you said). Fish weren't just rising, in a few spots they were physically propelling themselves out of the water after the flutterers. Luckily, I did have some black caddis in my case but not enough. The first fish I caught pounded one in a little section of slackwater...first cast. That's when you know it will be a good day. The only thing that could have made it better would have been if I had taken everything else out of the box and tied 40 more black caddis on Saturday night. It was fun to see fish in the shallow water. However I did not see any mayflies whatsoever which surprised me a bit.
