Have rod will travel
 (United States)

I am a new student at Minnesota State Mankato, I looked at the maps that the DNR provides and figure i'll try fishing in the Northfield/any where thats reasonably close to Mankato.  If anyone is interested in putting up with a novice trout fisherman I would appreciate the company.  I've caught a few Rainbows along the north shore but most of my fly fishing experience is limited to crappie and bass in the north country.  I did try and do some fishing around Lanesbourough but i only caught a few.  Let me know...

Hey Ryan, welcome to the board.  I think you have a few options around mankato that would be more productive then arond northfield.  I am also a novice flyer especially in minnesota wateres, so if your interested in a fly partner I could be your man, two guys who don't know much are probably better then one.  I have had better luck south of rochester, are  you interested in winter season???

Hey Brando

I just realized that this thread is for actual fishing reports...I apoligize to other users

Anyhow, I have to go home to pick up my equipment next week but I am definently interested in winter fly fishing!  I'm venturing into the world of tying flies at the moment so hopefully i'll be able to produce some fish on my new creations come winter.  Send me a email and we'll set up a trip.  str8tline916@msn.com

Hi Ryan and welcome to the forums.  And no biggie on the posting here and it wasn't wrong.  Ryan where from the "north country"?

This coming winter season I'll be heading down a couple of times to give it a try.  I've never done any winter fly fishing yet and look forward to doing.  Maybe I'll have to hook up with either of you two or whoever wants to join me.

I actually might be going down there to get some video footage of winter fly fishing in SE Minnesota.  I'm going to start make short video clips of fly fishing in the Midwest and add them to the site,  should be fun to work on the those.  So anyone want to be a star?

Re: Have rod will travel

I've lived and worked at Oak Island on lake of the woods for a few summers but i do most of my fishing in the Leech lake area and the Alexandria area.  I have done my fair share of fishing up by Two Harbors but not near as much as i would have liked to.  Let me know when you're planning on comming down, hopefully i'll have this winter fly fishing thing figured out but not likely....

Re: Have rod will travel

Just moved to Mn last September from Colorado and didn't do any winter fishing. I did do a lot of fishing on the Root and some tribs. Found the fishing to be better than I expected. Tried a few times on the larger section of the root to throw some larger streamers for a bruiser brown but only caught a few decent size ones. I would be interested in doing some winter fishing. Throwing some midges will remind me of the San Juan although, the weather will be much colder.

Re: Have rod will travel

Welcome djlong86 to the forums and to the state of Minnesota!

Looks like I'll be heading down to the cities area 2 times in January and trying to squeeze some fly fishing time down there.  It will probably end being a couple of Monday's in January all day.  Barring the weather is reasonable, I'll be trying my hand at some winter fly fishing, I'm excited to try it.  So if anyone wants to hook up and do some fishing, shoot me an email at ouitdee@yahoo.com.  I'll be going for my Captains License and taking classes in St. Paul and the Monday I'll have open will be 8th and 15th of January!

The only area I know alright is from Trout Run Creek area to the Whitewater State Park and surrounding areas, other than that I'm lost, all those farm fields look the same to me   I'll even trade a day of some novice guiding  for some smallmouth bass fishing up here on the St. Louis River where I'm at this spring.

Oh, btw, if some does want to hook up, smile for the cameras, cause I'll most likely have the video cam to take some footage of some winter fly fishing in SE.

Tight lines everyone!

Ok, it's official I'll be coming down there during the first 2 weekends of January.  I want to try to get out early on the first Saturday around 10:00am and get out fly fishing.  I just got a new Scott 4wt that I want to test out.  Otherwise, I'll stay the 2 following Mondays after each weekend if any one wants to have some company and so me around.

And if you come up this way I can try to get you on some fly rod smallies like the one in my sig..

Flymaster,

Let me know exactly when you are coming down and we will go try to throw some midges in the SE.,.  I fished the area quite a bit last summer so I should know of a few spots. Hopefully the weather will be half decent so we are not knocking ice off the tips every cast...

Sounds like a plan djlong86!  What's your email so I can send you a note.  I haven't decided on exactly what days yet.  But I also want to wait a little bit on what the weather will be like.  But here are the days I would go fishing if the weather is ok.
Mon Jan 8th and Mon Jan 15th for sure on those days.
Or the 2 Sundays 7th or the 14th.
I'm just trying to give myself some breathing room for cold weather and hopefully I should be able to get 1 decent day.  And no biggie if you can't make it, I should be able to do it on my own.

I can do that Saturday then.  Jan 6th.  Sounds good to me.  Can you make it djlong86?

I'm probably going to go out the Mondays 8th and the 15th as well.

My email is ouitdee@yahoo.com.  Shoot me an email and we can set it up.  I'm not super familiar with the area, but I can read map I think.  I've been to Trout Run, Root River areas, and Whitewater River areas.  Alright, sounds like it should be a good time.  Feel alot better knowing I'll be tagging along with peeps that have fished the SE more than I have and it will be in the Winter to boot!

You guys need any flies,  fly line, leaders, etc?  I think John from Great Lakes Fly Company can set me up with some stuff.

Re: Have rod will travel

I will be in... I am exited to go wet a line.. I hope that the weather will be ok.. I can tie some flys for anyone that needs them.. I am guessing that midges will be the ticket although a wooley slowly stripped in deeper holes can produce some large fish in winter months.. If anyone wants to come tie let me know.. Have a large desk in the basement for getting the boxes loaded...

I'm assuming that when you guys are discussing fishing Torut Run in the winter, you mean in the WW state park area since the other Trout Run to the soiuth isn't open during the winter season: http://ontheflyguiding.com/regulations.htm

Hope you have good weather.
