I headed out on the St. Louis River for some smallies. Scott was out with me who contacting me through Minnesota Fly Fishing. He was in town for some business and wanted to get out and do some fly fishing and what a great person to be out fly fishing with. We finally found some decent smallies piles up in the shallows near a rocky shoreline with some emergent weeds and reeds. He had a few on that looked like in the 18" range. A break off at the boat and some spit hooks at the boat, so I couldn't get a pic. They were in there putting on the feed bag. The surface temps were in the low 70's, but they were still up shallow eating minnows.
Scott used a minnow streamer pattern whiched worked really well. By the way Scott, thanks for giving me one and I'll show John what you were using. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use one of those up here. I'm always experimenting and trying new things.
Well after that spot, I decided to try some other good spots, but the motor went tits up and had to be towed home. So that put a little damper on the fun. Hopefully the next time you get back, I'll have a newer motor by then. But it sure does suck when you got a boat sitting at home, but no way to use it. Oh, well time for some more stream trout fishing :)
Tight lines and be safe out there.
