Blackhoof River 4/21/06
(N/A) Modified By TheFlyMaster on 4/21/2006 9:03:46 PM)
A buddy and I decided to scope out the Blackhoof River on 4/21/06.  The water levels looked to be about normal, wasn't dirty or stained, but normal for a Northern Minnesota stream.  Stream temp was 46 degrees.  A few small midge looking flies were on the surface, but only saw a few small fish rising.  We fished from 9-12:30, overcast, light rain on and off.

We managed to C&R 9 fish between 4" and 10" inches.  I caught a 9" brook and Dave caught a 10" rainbow.  We had to tease the fish out of log jams that created nice deep pockets under and near them.  I used a pheasant tail and dave used a wooly bugger.  We had to add split shot to get the flies to stay in 1 place and down in the wood.  Not your typical fly fishing, but it worked.  Basically pocket water fishing.

The Blackhoof River has some growth along the banks with overhanging trees.  You wont' be doing alot of back cast on this stream.  Roll cast or lobbing a weighted fly was needed.  I'll have to investigate the Blackhoof River a little more this Summer.

Tight lines.
